A bridge is said to have existed here as early as 1620, a little east of the current connection. The bridge has been mentioned in writing since 1661 and it is shown for the first time on an early map from 1696. In 1730 it was replaced by a new one and this in turn by another in 1825. So far it had been a wooden structure that, sometimes poorly maintained, did not last long. Therefore, it was decided in 1849 to build a three- arched iron bridge, architects were Peter Georg Sundius (1823–1900) and Georg Theodor von Chiewitz (1815–1862). It was replaced by the current bridge in 1897.

Today's bridge

The current bridge was inaugurated in connection with the Stockholm Exhibition in 1897 . It is about 35 meters long and 10 meters wide iron construction with three truss arches. It was designed by Carl Fraenell and built by Bergsunds memaniska Verkstad on Södermalm . It has double lanes, wide sidewalks and it was dimensioned to carry the new tram line from Strandvägen to Djurgården. This line was discontinued in 1967 with the introduction of right-hand traffic in Sweden , but since 1991 trams have been running here again, the Djurgårdslinjen , initially a tourist and museum train, now a regular line. Djurgårsbron was completely renovated in 1977.

decoration

The decorations consist partly of four candelabra over each bridge pillar, designed by architect Ernst Josephson , as well as a cast-iron , richly decorated railing with stylized floral motifs. On both sides of the river there are two granite columns on which are the sculptures of four Nordic gods ( Heimdall , Frigg , Freya and Thor ). They are the work of the sculptor Rolf Adlersparre (1859–1943).
