The Strandvägen is a boulevard similar Boulevard in Stockholm in the district of Östermalm .

background

Strandvägen stretches from Nybroplan in the west to Djurgårdsbron in the east and is bordered in the south by the quay towards Nybroviken . The street is approx. 1200 meters long and approx. 35 meters wide (including the quay). In the 19th century his name was Ladugårdslands Strandgata , at that time there were only dilapidated houses and temporary accommodation, the path was hardly passable.

Planning and completion

In 1857, the Stockholm city lords began to discuss a quay from Nybroplan to Djurgårds Bridge and to improve the situation at Ladugårdslands Strandgata . The head of the municipal hydraulic engineering office, EE von Rothstein, was given the task of solving the problem and in 1859 he presented the plan for a wide, tree-planted boulevard "which is unparalleled in Europe" . Construction began in 1862, but Strandvägen , so named in 1885, was still a huge construction site until the 1890s . One of the builders, Isaak Hirsch, complained that he could only reach his construction site via detours or that he could be rowed across Nybroviken. For the Stockholm Exhibition in 1897 , however, everything was ready and Stockholm's new boulevard could be inaugurated.

From the start, also drove the new tram line on the 1897 also inaugurated Djurgårdsbron to Djurgården . In 1967 this line was discontinued with the introduction of right-hand traffic. Since 1991 a museum tram, the Djurgårdslinjen, has been running the old route again.

Today Strandvägen is the “fine” address in Stockholm and many celebrities have or had their residence here and numerous exclusive shops have their branches here.
