education and profession

Wolfgang Herzer was born in Lübeck in 1948 as the son of a doctor. He has lived in the Upper Palatinate since 1955 . In 1969 Herzer graduated from the Augustinus-Gymnasium Weiden . From 1972 to 1978 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Raimer Jochims and Jürgen Reipka . From 1979 to 2014 Herzer worked as an art teacher at the Elly-Heuss-Gymnasium Weiden . Since 2016 he has been a member of the Professional Association of Visual Artists Niederbayern-Oberpfalz.

Political commitment

From 1984 to 2002, Herzer was a local politician. The impetus for his political activity was the resistance of the Upper Palatinate population against the Wackersdorf reprocessing plant . Together with Maria Weber, Rudolf Perthold, Jost Hess and Horst Schmidt, Herzer was a founding member of the Weiden citizens' initiative against a reprocessing plant for nuclear fuel rods (WAA) in the Upper Palatinate, which was established on 9 March 1982. He was the first district councilor of the Greens in the Neustädter Kreisag and a member of the Weiden city council.

Engagement in the art scene of the Upper Palatinate

In 1993 Herzer founded the Kunstverein Weiden with the siblings Gabriele and Robert Hammer as an interest group "Art and Public Life". Until today (2017) he is speaker, artistic director and board member, since 2016 together with Robert Hammer. Robert Hammer runs the club and museum café Neues Linda in the exhibition building.

In 1999, Herzer initiated the merger of 19 art associations and museums from Upper Palatinate, Lower Bavaria and the Czech Republic to form the network cultural cooperative KoOpf Upper Palatinate . The aim was to build on the tradition of the SPUR group with this network and to strengthen and develop the self-confidence of the Upper Palatinate art space.

Since the death of Max Bresele , Herzer has been looking after his extensive estate. In 2017 Herzer set up a Max-Bresele-Museum in the house of the Kunstverein Weiden. In changing exhibitions, various aspects of the artistic work of Max Bresele and contemporary witness reports about him are shown.
