The Elly-Heuss-Gymnasium Weiden is a state high school for girls in Weiden in the Upper Palatinate with a linguistic, social and economic focus.

history

The school was founded in 1907 by a group of Weiden dignitaries as the “Higher Daughter School” and was initially run by the poor school sisters. The six-year “Lyceum”, the “Girls 'Middle School” and, in 1951, the “Girls' High School” developed from the daughters 'and later girls' school in several phases and branches. In 1969 the Weiden city council decided on the name "Elly-Heuss-Gymnasium" after the politician and social reformer Elly Heuss-Knapp . The city school since 1937 finally became a state high school in 1970.

location

The school is close to the center at the end of Weigelstrasse, about 250 m east of the New Town Hall and the Max-Reger-Halle. The sports facilities are right next to the building. It is a five-minute walk from the central bus station and the school from the city center, and around twelve minutes from the train station. The building was occupied in 1980 and received national attention because of its architecture.

Teaching and educational program

The first foreign language is English. French or Latin are offered as second foreign languages.

In grades 8 to 10, the training is characterized by the profile subjects of the three branches:

  • the linguistic high school with the profile subject Spanish as a third foreign language.
  • the economics and social science high school with a social science orientation with the profile subjects social studies and social practical basic education (with internships).
  • the economics and social science grammar school with an economics orientation with the profile subjects economics and law and business informatics.

The profile subjects of the two branches can be found again in the offer of the upper level as a supplement and deepening possibility, profile-related topics can also be chosen in the science-oriented or project-oriented seminars.

In addition to the lessons, foreign language skills are promoted through participation in competitions, through contacts and stays abroad as well as through qualification courses and special language tests.

Another focus of the school is comprehensive personality education, which is intended to promote responsibility and self-confidence, value-oriented behavior and social skills. In addition, social commitment and socially motivated activities are supported.

All day offer

With the open all-day offer “Elly eins plus”, the grammar school enables interested female pupils to be looked after, encouraged and encouraged after class (if necessary until 5 p.m.). For the girls from grades 5 to 7 there is own pedagogically trained and experienced staff available. All pupils can choose from a lunch menu that is freshly prepared at the school every day by the “Elly Mensa” team. The sponsoring association of the Elly-Heuss-Gymnasium is responsible for the two facilities "Elly eins plus" and "Elly-Mensa". The afternoon program for the students in the beginning grades is supplemented by an extensive tutor system. A full-day class started in Weiden for the first time at the beginning of the 2011/2012 school year with 27 pupils.

School life

Gymnastic, dance and artistic inclinations and creative talents are traditionally promoted and further developed in accordance with their age. The Elly-Heuss-Gymnasium regularly presents itself to the public with its own performances (“Das Elly tanzt”, concerts), exhibitions or by participating in championships throughout Bavaria.
