The Augustinus-Gymnasium Weiden (AGW) is the oldest high school in the city of Weiden in the Upper Palatinate . It was built in 1903 under the name Royal Latin School .

history

Precursor schools

From 1530 to 1627 there was a royal Latin school in Weiden with six classes, the attendance of which allowed entry into a university. This was followed by the influence of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation by several Latin schools of different denominations . From 1627 to 1648 there was a Jesuit Latin school, in 1648 at the time of the occupation by the Swedes a Protestant school and in 1653 again the establishment of a Catholic German and a Latin school.

high school

As early as the middle to the end of the 19th century there were efforts by the larger Upper Palatinate cities to establish a third grammar school in the region. After several setbacks and developments that made the goal for Weiden a long way off, there was even a city council resolution for the grammar school in 1889. However, efforts subsided again with the construction of the central workshops of the Bavarian railways.
Only in 1898 by a resolution of the state parliament came more specific planning and construction of the school building.
In 1903 the building was completed and the school started operating. However, there were problems with the name; a somewhat premature golden inscription LUITPOLD-GYMNASIUM (Prinzregent-Luitpold-Gymnasium) had to be replaced by a simple humanistic high school due to lack of approval . In 1907 the first school leaving exams were taken.

During the two world wars, the grammar school fared no differently than others, an orderly school operation became more and more difficult due to a lack of teachers, a lack of teaching aids, malnutrition and students who had moved in. In 1915 only one pupil could take the final exam; further took emergency exams.

1933 to 1945

In the time of National Socialism there was hostility on the part of the system, especially due to the goal of humanistic education. However, in contrast to other grammar schools, which were mainly converted into high schools, a kind of special form could be adopted, but this did not change the restrictions and the loss of the actual task. In 1938 school hours were shortened to eight classes, in 1944 military service for 15- and 16-year-olds, and finally in April 1944 the school was closed.

from 1945

After the military government had checked and assigned teachers, classes could begin again in January 1946 with a service and an opening act. In 1953 there was a fire and the entire top floor was lost, which was used to add a third floor during the reconstruction. In 1965 the school was given the current name Augustinus-Gymnasium through the reallocation of all higher schools to "Gymnasien" . In 1966/67 a double gymnasium and 1968–72 an extension to the north of the existing school building was built, which was increased in 2009–10. In 2007 a new adjoining building was added with a cafeteria and rooms for afternoon care.

In the last few years the high school has grown significantly, which is mainly due to the branch of the economy. In the 2004/05 school year, for example, there were four classes of one grade for the first time, five classes for the first time in 2006/07, and six classes for the first time in 2007/08.

music

The AGW is known for its musical offer. This includes the choirs, an orchestra, lessons in solo singing, instrumental lessons as well as jazz combo, a Latin ensemble and a rock band.

There is a choir of equal voices for the lower grades (grades 5–7), and a mixed choir is available for the middle and upper grades. At least two concerts are held every year.
