Hans Schwemmer

Hans Schwemmer (born September 11, 1945 in Riggau near Pressath ; † October 1, 2001 in Cairns , Australia ) was a German theologian and diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Schwemmer attended the Augustinus grammar school in Weiden. Then he was a theology student with matriculation number 1 at the newly founded University of Regensburg . He was also their first AStA chairman. This was followed by the ordination of priests in the High Cathedral in Regensburg on July 3, 1971, years of chaplaincy in Sulzbach-Rosenberg and Cham (St. Josef) from 1971 to 1975 as well as church diplomatic training and career in Rome. At the Pontifical Lateran University , he was in 1978 with the thesis "The ideal types, church 'and' sect 'in the sociology of religion Max Weber and Ernst Troeltsch " to Dr. iur. can. PhD . In 1979 Schwemmer was assigned to the Apostolic Nunciature in India. In 1980 Pope John Paul II awarded him the papal title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ). In 1983 he worked as secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature at the European Community in Brussels . In 1986 he was an auditor in Argentina . From 1988 he was a nunciature auditor and head of the German-speaking department at the Papal State Secretariat .

On July 9, 1997, Hans Schwemmer was appointed Titular Archbishop of Rebellum , Apostolic Nuncio of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands , and on September 21, 1997 in the High Cathedral of Regensburg by Cardinal State Secretary Angelo Sodano with the assistance of Bishop Manfred Müller of Regensburg and the Secretary of the Congregation Josip Uhač consecrated bishop for the evangelization of peoples . His episcopal motto was: In libertatem vocati (“You are called to freedom”). He was Apostolic Nuncio in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands until his death on October 1, 2001. Hans Schwemmer was buried on October 13, 2001 in the church of his home parish St. Georg in Pressath .
