Matriculation number

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A matriculation number is an identifier for personal identification - a specific identifier that uniquely identifies a person in a person directory ( matriculation ). Matriculation numbers enable a person to be clearly identified even if this is not possible based on their name or a combination of name and date of birth and place of birth. Since the numbers are only assigned once, this assignment can also be traced back over longer periods of time.

use

Nowadays, the term matriculation number is particularly common at universities and colleges . Other personal identifiers, such as the social security number , are not referred to as matriculation numbers .

In Austria and Switzerland, the matriculation number contains the university, the year and a sequential number that is assigned when you enroll for the course (matriculation) . It is therefore unique across the country. Austrian universities of applied sciences assign so-called personal codes equivalent to the matriculation numbers, which are made up of a combination of the year of enrollment, winter or summer semester, the code of the course and a consecutive number. Therefore, there is also a change when, for example, a subsequent master’s degree is started. In Germany, the matriculation number is assigned to every student by the university when they enroll and is only unique within the university.

Members of the French Foreign Legion also receive a unique matricule number (French: Matricule ), which has been six digits since around 1953. In the III. The Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War stipulates that when asked, a prisoner is only obliged to state his name, first name and rank, date of birth and matriculation number or, if this is missing, other equivalent information.
