SPAX screw: type fully threaded, countersunk head

SPAX is a protected brand name for self-tapping "universal screws ". It was introduced in 1967 by the South Westphalian company Altenloh, Brinck & Co (ABC). The name is an acronym for Spa nplatten screw with Phillips ( x ).

construction

Screws of this type differ from classic wood screws (e.g. wood screws with hexagon DIN 571, and wood screws with slot DIN 95, DIN 96, DIN 97) by a different ratio of outer to core diameter, i.e. H. the core diameter is relatively smaller here.

This reduces the screw-in resistance on the one hand and increases the thread coverage from material to screw on the other. The shear resistance of the screwed material associated with this overlap is decisive for the pull-out strength that can be achieved. The threads are much sharper than with conventional wood screws. In addition, the core is cylindrical (after a conical starting piece), while it is continued in a conical shape in classic wood screws.

Another special feature of the SPAX screws is their patented waved thread. As a result, the screw-in material at the front end of the screw is rubbed and the following thread can run with less friction. This reduces the risk of the screw loosening under dynamic loads. The corrugated thread and the constellation of the thread tip at the special angle to the thread pitch contribute to the fact that the torque to be applied is lower when screwing in. In addition, only a little material is displaced, which minimizes the risk of the workpiece tearing or splitting at the screw-in point (splicing). Chipboard is more prone to this than most natural woods. In general, pre-drilling can be dispensed with.

Appearance: From 1967 to 1992 the screws could be recognized by the grain size on the screw head. The lettering (SPAX) has been pressed into the screw head since 1992.

Many adapted variations of the screw are now available, depending on the application and material . In the trade, the formation of the screw head profile in the form of Pozidriv or Torx is very common for countersunk screws.

Due to the widespread use of screws, the term SPAX has become a generic term for chipboard screws in Germany .

Building law

It should be noted that when using the screw in the area relevant to building regulations, the suitability as a construction product according to the state building regulations (see e.g. §17 LBauO MV) must be proven.
