Bakkushan was a band from Mannheim who provided indie and alternative rock music with German-language lyrics.

The name of the band comes from Japanese (Japanese バ ッ ク シ ャ ン ) and basically describes "a woman who looks better from behind than from the front".

history

While studying music at the Baden-Württemberg Pop Academy in Mannheim, songwriter Daniel Schmidt founded the band Bakkushan together with Christian Kalle, Robert Kerner and Jan Siekmann in June 2007. On July 28, 2007 they were already on the stage of the Pop Academy at the Arena of Pop event . At home on the computer, Daniel Schmidt developed the first EP with five titles in order to use it as a demo and to implement it with the band. The EP included demo versions of the songs Baby you look good , Leave the sun and me alone and the title Springwut , after which the EP was named. Due to the surprising success that the title Springwut was able to book on the Internet , the first EP was published under the same title Springwut in the same year. The accompanying music video was created in-house without external donors.

The first tour with almost 40 appearances was also planned and carried out independently by the band in 2008. After winning the Jägermeister Rock: Liga video contest , the opportunity arose to produce a professional video for the first title Springwut . By winning the Beck’s On Stage Festival Challenge 2008 , Bakkushan received an appearance at the Hurricane Festival 2008. The band also distributed their music on MySpace . After a live concert, an A&R manager from the EMI label approached them and offered them a contract. Bakkushan turned it down for the time being because they wanted to fine-tune their music and went to see the manager half a year later to close the offered record deal.

In 2008, Bakkushan was signed by EMI Virgin Records and work on the debut album began at the end of the year in Cologne under the direction of producers Daniel Schmidt and Moritz Enders , who previously worked with the Donots , Revolverheld , Livingston and Blackmail . In spring 2009 the band could be seen in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. With Baby, You look good the first single was released on 12 June 2009.. This title was also included on the soundtrack for the film Vorstadtkrokodile 2 .

The band's debut album, which should have been released on September 11, 2009, was released on March 26, 2010 and was titled with the band's name. The single Alles was aus Gold was previously released on March 12, 2010. On April 16, 2010, Bakkushan appeared on MTV Home's 43rd episode . On this day they were represented with their debut album at number 96 in the album charts. Appearances with Jennifer Rostock and Jupiter Jones followed . In the spring and summer of 2010 Bakkushan was on tour in Germany and Austria.

On July 23, 2010, Bakkushan released their third single Lass die Sonne und mich alone . With this single they appeared in mid-October 2010 in the television series Gute Zeiten, Bad Zeiten , where they also played the single Springwut , which was only released after the filming of the episode .

Bakkushan represented the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg on October 1st, 2010 in Berlin at the Bundesvision Song Contest 2010 . There they presented their fourth single Springwut from their debut album Bakkushan , which was released on September 27, 2010. You finished 9th in the competition with 39 points.

On March 30, 2011, the band set to music in a promotion for Vodafone called "#tweetlied" for eleven hours of short messages submitted by users on Twitter and Facebook for this campaign.

On June 29, 2012, the single Just the night from the second album Head in the Storm was released , the release of which was announced by EMI for July 13, 2012.

On March 31, 2013 Daniel Schmidt and Christian Kalle announced on the band's Facebook page that Robert Kerner and Jan Siekmann were no longer members of Bakkushan with immediate effect. For the Kopf im Sturm tour, which started in the following week, Benny and Flip provided a replacement for guitar and drums.

Since 2015 there have been no more activities by the band members. Jan Siekmann confirmed that Bakkushan was "history" to his knowledge.
