The Modular Festival is a three-day music festival in Augsburg . It is the largest non-profit youth and pop culture festival in Bavarian Swabia and is organized by the Stadtjugendring Augsburg (SJR) and funded by the city of Augsburg.

Originally conceived as an indoor festival in 2007, the Modular Festival has been transformed into an open-air concert series . It attracts around 30,000 visitors over three days. Until 2018 it took place in Wittelsbacher Park around the Augsburg hotel tower . In 2019 the venue was relocated to the former gasworks in Augsburg-Oberhausen.

history

The Modular Festival is the successor to the Augsburg youth festivals "x-large" and "PopCity". It gets its name from the various modules that make up it.

The Modular Festival began in 2007 as an in-house festival and has grown over the years, especially in 2011 with the city of Augsburg's “City of Peace” project for the 2011 women's soccer world championship . From 2009 to 2011 the festival took place at various locations in Augsburg, e.g. B. in the concert hall in the Leopold-Mozart-Zentrum , on the Rathausplatz , the Annahof and in various Augsburg clubs.

Impulses

The event annually presents well-known national, international and local artists from the genres of indie, pop and electro. In addition to the headliners , the highlight “Puppet on a String” is part of the traditional opening of the festival. The name "Puppet on a String" is based on the Augsburg-based Puppenkiste and describes a professional classical orchestra that reinterprets pieces by local artists (dolls) together with them under the guidance of professional arrangers (string pullers) and brings them to the stage .

With its focus on the involvement of the local cultural and creative industries, numerous voluntary helpers and the guiding principle of participation firmly anchored in the concept, the event goes beyond a conventional visitor festival. The city and its young citizens are involved in the festival with their ideas in advance through workshops and hands-on activities, which gives the festival its character.

financing

In 2012, the city of Augsburg decided on a biennale concept, according to which series of events such as the Jazzsommer, Klapps or Modular are only funded every two years. After the Modular Festival attracted over 12,000 visitors in 2013, it was canceled in 2014. In 2015, the Augsburg cultural committee and the Stadtjugendring agreed to organize the Modular Festival every year for the next three years. This concept will only be possible if sponsors are successfully acquired , as the municipal subsidy should remain at 75,000 euros per year.

particularities

The special features of the Modular Festival include the diverse supporting program as well as the ideas of participation and networking, which are also promoted by the comparatively low admission prices.

Supporting program

The supporting program includes workshops of all kinds, art and culture ( poetry slam , author readings , exhibitions , discussion panels) as well as sports and creative markets. There is something for every age group of visitors: “Modular Kids”, for example, focuses on children from around five to twelve years of age. Other workshops are aimed specifically at young people up to the age of 18. The workshops move, for example, in the areas of textiles , music , painting or upcycling . The main focus is on current topics and subcultural offers.

Participation and networking

Particular emphasis is placed on the participation, involvement and codetermination of the city's young people, in short participation . With a large number of volunteers, mostly young people between 18 and 25 years of age, all areas of festival organization are covered: production, technology, gastronomy, artist support, program support, office, merchandise and much more. Young people can gain experience in the field of event and cultural management under the guidance of professionals . Around 350 voluntary helpers were active at Modular 2017.

The involvement of young people is intended to ensure that the festival remains up-to-date and meets the tastes of young people. In cooperation with the Augsburg universities, artistic content will be worked out in seminars before the festival and will be contributed to the festival. In the “Modular Youngstars” program, for example, a group of young people under the guidance of professionals takes on the complete organization of their own stage at the festival (including public relations , casting , selection of bands and coordination with the artists). Festival visitors can participate in the discussions at many of the discussion panels.

The Modular Festival tries to live up to the guiding principle of networking through numerous collaborations. The festival connects, for example, the Augsburg universities and music schools, individual institutions and organizations, various municipal offices as well as many artists and creative professionals in the region. The low admission price compared to other youth and pop culture festivals promotes the participation of as many actors as possible and thus networking.

criticism

The festival took place in a nature reserve ( Wittelsbacher Park ). Especially after the 2016 festival, there was criticism of the environmental damage. Bird monitoring showed that the birds nesting in the park were not affected.
