history
Beginnings (1999-2003)
Singer and guitarist Oliver Gottwald and bassist Michael Schmidt went to school together, but at that time they still played in different bands. When the two groups broke up, it was decided to make music together in the future and, with the drummer Ingolf Nössner, brought the missing third member into the ranks via an advertisement.
In the following years Anajo (the name is derived from the Bud Spencer film " Banana Joe ") made numerous appearances in Augsburg and the surrounding area. At that time, their music was still very much influenced by synthesizers and electronic sounds. In the course of time, the band moved closer and closer to the indie pop sound for which they are known today - that means fewer synthesizers and more guitar, while never completely doing without electronic tones. From the beginning, the central element of their music was the German lyrics, in which the singer Oliver Gottwald often (himself) strikes ironic tones that sometimes drift into naivety. Happiness and melancholy are close together in Anajo's music.
In the year it was founded, the Augsburg-based company released their first demo Pop and Die Welt in their own distribution. This was followed by Geboren für die Stadt (2000), TanzTanzBand (2002) and Curtain Up (2003). The song I get you out of here made it into the rotation and in the editorial charts of the radio station FM4 (ORF / Austria) in 2003 and quickly attracted the public's interest. With increasing awareness, the fan base increased so that the newcomers played more than 50 concerts in Germany and Austria in 2003.
The albums (since 2004)
In 2004 Anajo released her debut album Nah bei mir on Wallpaper Records / Indigo. In 2006 the band was on tour in Russia on behalf of the Goethe Institute , and Anajo also played concerts in Ukraine sponsored by the Robert Bosch Foundation .
The band's second album, Hello, who actually knows who here? , was released on February 9, 2007 by Wallpaper Records and brought the band several cover stories in well-known music magazines such as the Intro . In advance of this there was a pre-EP in September 2006 with the title Spätsommersonne , which contains three new tracks and two live recordings. The first single from the new album was called If you only knew and was released on January 19, 2007. Suzie Kerstgens from the band Klee could be won as a guest singer . At the Bundesvision Song Contest 2007 Anajo competed with this song for the federal state of Bavaria and thus achieved 9th place.
From February to May 2007 Anajo played an extensive tour for the new album with around 50 concerts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Some of the performances were double concerts with Klee . Various festival appearances followed in the summer of 2007. On September 20, 2007, during the Popkomm in Berlin , they were awarded the Bavarian Music Lion, awarded by the Bavarian State Government, as the best Bavarian indie band.
In November / December 2008 the band interrupted the work on the third album for a tour with the “Pop-Orchester” of the University of Augsburg , an ensemble of the Uni-Big-Band. A recording of this tour was released on DVD in 2009 on Wallpaper Records. To mark the 10th anniversary of the band, the album Anajo and the Pop Orchestra was released on November 27, 2009 . The song Jungs cry , a reinterpretation of Boys don't cry ( The Cure ), was not released as a single .
In autumn 2010 the Goethe-Institut Moscow invited Anajo again on a tour through Russia.
On 11 February 2011, the band released with three their third studio and total fourth album, which although provides the familiar Anajo sound, however, in contrast to its predecessor largely dispense with the use of electronic sounds. At the same time as the album was released, Anajo started a tour in a total of 24 cities in Germany and Austria in March 2011.
In autumn 2014 the band went on a self-chosen "family break". The band also announced that they would “musically go their separate ways”.
The song My first real love song can be heard in episode nine of the fourth season of the American series Better Call Saul .
