Daara J , also Daara-J (German about school of life ) are a hip-hop / reggae group from Senegal . Along with Positive Black Soul, you are one of the most important representatives of Seneraps . Members are N'Dango D, Aladji Man and Faada Freddy.

Career

The group made their first appearance in 1994 and released their first tape that same year. In 2004 they achieved their first publication on a major western label with Boomrang ; they were then represented in the world music charts of various countries for months . As a result, they appeared internationally, for example at Live 8 in the Eden Project in Cornwall .

In the Senegalese presidential election campaign in 2000, they helped the challenger Abdoulaye Wade to write his speeches and to support his anti-corruption platform. An action that was not undisputed within the scene; especially since, in the opinion of the scene, the old corrupt president was successfully ousted, but there was no improvement in the situation under the new one.

Since 2007 the group has been performing under the name Daara J Family .

style

The group's music is based on influences from French and American hip-hop, reggae music, soul , Cuban music and influences from traditional Senegalese music. The group raps mostly in French and Wolof . Compared to other Senerappers, they are relatively far removed from US hip-hop and have closer proximity to Caribbean and African influences. You yourself say in your internationally most successful song Boomrang that Hip-Hop was born in Africa, grew up in the USA and is now coming back to Africa.

Lyrically, they are more in the tradition of African hip hop , in that they are much more explicitly political than most of their Western colleagues: they rap about globalization, the dangers that traditional African societies face, the threat to the environment or spirituality.
