Positive Black Soul is a hip hop band from Dakar , Senegal . The representatives of Seneraps were the first band on the African hip-hop scene to celebrate international success.

Career

The group has existed since 1989. The two members Doug-E Tee and Didier Awadi (Didier 'dj' Awadi; Didier `DjDj` Awadi) were the leaders of two rival youth gangs in Dakar. One group was characterized by the Muslim faith, while the other group belonged to Christians. After prolonged musical confrontations, they realized that they had more in common than what separated them, and formed a team together. They themselves say that they were musically influenced by the musical culture of Africa as well as by IAM , A Tribe Called Quest , Gang Starr , Boogie Down Productions and MC Solaar . They also say of their special form of music: "Rap is a child of slaves, it was born in Africa, it grew up in America."

The band name should be in English so that it could be understood internationally, PBS rap in English, French and Wolof . The cassette and the song Boul Fale (Wolof: Scheißegal ) from 1994 brought them first notoriety in Senegal. In the early 1990s, the native Senegalese MC Solaar hosted various hip-hop parties in Dakar, at which PBS also performed. After they had managed to play a few concerts in France and Belgium, they got a record deal with the major label Mango Records through the agency of MC Solaar . The album was a surprising success and was followed by a tour of West Africa , Europe and America.
