Schnipo Schranke was an indie pop band from Hamburg . It consisted of the two singers and instrumentalists Daniela Reis (* 1988) and Friederike ("Fritzi") Ernst (* 1989). Intro magazine called the band's genre “HipHop-Chanson-Fuck”. Schnipo Schranke caused a sensation in 2014/2015 with their song Pisse , which was largely distributed via social media and is about unhappy love.

The two band founders Daniela Reis and Friederike "Fritzi" Ernst met at the Frankfurt University of Music , where Reis studied the cello and Ernst the recorder . For both Ernst and Reis, the career perspective was initially classical orchestra . However, they found the training to be too uncreative and too strongly oriented towards existing repertoires and perfection. Fritzi Ernst commented on the reasons for dropping out of studies and founding a band in 2015 as follows: “In classical music you are constantly compared to others. We wanted to be creative and do something of our own. "
In 2012 the two formed as a music duo. The band name was based on the name for schnitzel with french fries (Schnipo) and mayonnaise / ketchup (barrier; because of the red and white color marking on railway barriers) - a word created by the comedian Kurt Krömer in his show. The musical accompaniment consisted of piano chords , synth set pieces and drum beats. Reis solved the problem of a missing band drummer by acquiring drum accompaniment in an autodidactic way. In addition to working on the repertoire, the duo made their first club appearances on a smaller scale. The response was positive - the audience sometimes sang along with the songs, word for word.
Her clip Best Friends, which was uploaded to the video platform YouTube , became a first scene success .
In 2013 Reis and Ernst moved to Hamburg . On the occasion of a reading they made contact with Rocko Schamoni , whom they handed a demo CD to. Frank Spilker from the stars became aware of the duo and asked Reis and Ernst whether they would like to take part in the star album Flucht in den Flucht and go on tour with the band.
In 2014 Schnipo Schranke caused a sensation with another YouTube clip. The song Pisse , according to taz a “tragicomic hymn about breaking up”, was blocked in the original version - officially due to a penis representation in a sequence. The piece, which among other things attracted attention with its frivolous and explicit text passages (for example: "I held your cell phone with my ass cheeks / To talk to you / Thought 'you think something like that is funny / Since then you've loved me platonically."), According to the music editors of Intro , Musikexpress and Spex, it was one of the biggest hits of 2014. In 2014, the music magazine Intro chose her song Pisse at number 1 in its annual charts, and Musikexpress placed her in the top ten of its annual charts. In the same year, Pisse appeared for the first time on sound carriers: on the sampler No Movement, a joint production of the Hamburg independent labels Staatsakt und Euphorie.
The 2015 debut album entitled Satt was produced by Ted Gaier from Goldene Lemon and was released on Buback Records . Not included on Satt was the piece Beste Freunde, the band's first successful clip. Album release and the success of piss attracted numerous band portraits and reviews in a number of established media by - among other things in the world , the time , the mirror , in the ARD , the ZDF , the taz and the weekly Jungle World .
On January 30, 2017, the successor Rare was released , which reached number 66 in the German album charts.
In November 2019 Daniela Reis announced the dissolution of Schnipo Schranke in an interview with Musikexpress .
Style, self-assessment and reviews
According to their own statements, Schnipo Schranke developed their style without any particular musical references. There were no role models from pop music , and they weren't even familiar with the Hamburg School . In an interview with the broadcaster BR2 , Ernst and Reis only admitted that they were both convinced Sido listeners. Fritzi Ernst about the band environment at the time they were founded as well as potential feminist references: “When we started the band, we were completely isolated and always hung out with Daniela in the dump. Feminism wasn't an issue for us at all. We wrote what we thought of. ” Reis classified the move to Hamburg as a positive change. The Hamburg music scene had welcomed the band. In Frankfurt, on the other hand, the situation was more difficult because there was no such scene there and hardly any people went to concerts.
On several occasions Reis and Ernst distanced themselves from excessive demands. Reis: “The only ideal we have is that we sing about weaknesses. If you show your mistakes very aggressively, you give people a lot. Maybe that's why they celebrate us like that. ” In an interview published in Zeit Campus , they described the existential uncertainty before and during the switch to pop music as an essential driving force. In addition, the vocabulary they use has long been part of everyday life; therefore explicit language is only a matter of course for them as a band. In terms of work, Schnipo Schranke are obsessed with details who work for a long time on texts and sounds - especially on the texts that, according to Reis, are actually no longer a word of chance.
The media classified the duo's lyrics and music almost in unison as unusual. The Germany radio characterized the text-music mix with the term "profanity-Chansons" and compared the band with the Lassie Singers . The Rolling Stone called Satt an album with "vulgar lyrics and organ grooves". According to BR2 , the trademarks of the Schnipo-Schranke style are “[...] super catchy melodies, minimalist recorded with recorder, drums, piano and synthesizer . As straightforward as possible. The band portrait in the weekly newspaper Jungle World offered a more differentiated judgment . The style of music created is certainly also to be seen as a reaction of defiance to the unsatisfactory study of music. In too many places the album Satt lives from the puns of the lyrics, which come across as a mixture of Rainald Grebe and Charlotte Roche . In a contribution to the world, the freelance cultural author Frédéric Schwilden described the duo's music as rather banal . In doing so, he raised the fundamental question of why every generation of indie bands should sound just as the same and irrelevant as their predecessors. Schwilden: “The two of them write great song caricatures with keyboard instruments and bollard drums. The point is that their partners leave them because they find them too disgusting even though they are disgusting themselves. That often sounds so crooked that it is reminiscent of Loriot's recorder evening . ” All in all, the duo's music would come across as feminist, especially among the (male) makers of the profession. However, the band has nothing to do with the feminist 360-degree concept and the associated cultural set pieces such as Patti Smith , Simone de Beauvoir and Bikini Kill . The taz, on the other hand, positively emphasized the band's concept, which is oriented towards everyday observations.
