medlz
medlz is a German a cappella band from Dresden , which was founded in 1999 under the name " nonets ".
history
All five band members were previously active in the Dresden Philharmonic Children's Choir. With their first single release, the group achieved primarily regional success, but is now active nationwide. At the benefit concert initiated by the Puhdys for the victims of the flood disaster on the Elbe , on September 15, 2002, they performed as “nonets” alongside many other bands and artists as an opener in front of 30,000 spectators on the Dresden Theaterplatz . They were awarded bronze at the international "A Cappella Competition 2003" in Graz , their first album "velvet" was awarded in 2004 by the international a cappella organization "CASA" for the "Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards" in the category "Best Pop / Rock Album ”and they won first prize in the“ A Cappella ”category at the Westspitzen Festival.
After their renaming from “nonets” to “mëdlz” on October 20, 2005, their third album was released in the summer of 2006. In December 2006 they went on a Christmas tour with the band Karat . In 2007 medlz organized the Dresden A Cappella Festival for the first time, which has been held annually in the Parktheater Großer Garten since then . In 2009 their next album "Aufgetaucht" was released, at the same time the trema was removed from the band name. In the same year the band also recorded a Christmas record. In November 2010 the medlz album “Our Time” was released, on which the medlz covered a number one hit from the last 20 years. Also in November 2010, singer Lydia gave birth to a daughter and was represented for half a year by Hannah Fuchs, who also played in the RTL series Geile Zeit . In order to have more time for her family, Lydia left completely in 2013, but is still in close contact with the band.
The medlz have been on the road as a quartet since 2014. In 2016 Maria left the band, also due to family planning and the desire to finally do something different in life than sing. Maria continues to work in the background for medlz's Christmas concert planning. Joyce-Lynn Lella followed in Maria's footsteps at the end of 2016.
In order to increase the entire range of the a cappella group, a singer's voice is transposed one or two octaves down using an effects device.
In July 2018 they had their first appearance at the Zelt-Musik-Festival in Freiburg im Breisgau .
In October 2019, the band announced that ex no-angel singer Nadja Benaissa will be part of the ensemble from April 2020.
