Günter A. Buchwald

Günter A. Buchwald (* 1952 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German conductor , pianist , violinist / violist and composer .

Life

He is one of the founders of the silent film renaissance. Since 1978 he has accompanied around 2600 different silent films in around 2900 film concerts. He was invited to the international film festivals Bonner Sommerkino , Le Giornate del Cinema Muto in Pordenone , British Silent Film Festival , retrospective program of the Berlinale , Kyoto Film Festival , StummFilmMusikTage Erlangen , Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna and the Festival Internacional de Cine Recobrado in Valparaíso . The 10th Tokyo International Film Festival opened with the restored version of the film Das Mädchen Sumiko , to which Buchwald contributed the composition. For the reconstructed version of the film The Dance of Death , Buchwald was commissioned with the composition.

He is currently musical director of Bristol's Slapstick Silent Film Festival and permanent guest conductor of the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra for silent film concerts . He also conducts the Freiburg Filmharmonic Orchestra, which he founded in 1992 . At the Freiburg University of Music Buchwald has worked as a lecturer in music education. He teaches instrumental pedagogy at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland and is a guest lecturer for film music at the University of Zurich and the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

His variety of styles from baroque to avant-garde, from folk to jazz make him a film companion, duo partner and ensemble member z. B. the Prima Vista Social Club , as head of the European Silent Screen Virtuosi or his own ensemble Silent Movie Music Company (among others with Matthias Stich ). As a conductor, Buchwald has performed with Giora Feidman , Markus Stockhausen , the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra , the Tokyo Prefecture Symphony Orchestra , the Banat Philharmonic and the Arditti Quartet , among others .

Buchwald is a member of the Freiburg composers interest group.
