David Afkham (* 1983 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German conductor.

Life

David Afkham received his first piano and violin lessons at the age of six. In 2002 he won first prize in the solo piano category at the national youth music competition . At the age of 15, he became a young student studying piano, music theory and conducting at the Freiburg University of Music . He completed his conducting studies at the Liszt School of Music in Weimar .

David Afkham was a scholarship holder of the Richard Wagner Association Bayreuth , a member of the Conductors Forum of the German Music Council , and the first scholarship holder of the Bernard Haitink Fund for Young Talent.

In 2008 he won the London Donatella Flick conducting competition and was entrusted with the post of Assistant Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra for two years .

In 2010 he was the first ever to receive the newly founded “Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award”.

In 2012 David Afkham completed his three-year tenure as assistant conductor of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra .

In regular collaboration, David Afkham assisted his mentor Bernard Haitink on numerous concert cycles with the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra.

The highlights in the years 2011 to 2013 included the debuts with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra , the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra New York, the Los Angeles Philharmonic , the Munich Philharmonic , the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin and the Staatskapelle Dresden , the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, the Stuttgart radio Symphony Orchestra , the Frankfurt radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt, the Swedish radio Symphony Orchestra, the Gothenburg Symphony , the Vienna Symphony , the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia , the Filarmonica della Scala , the Spanish National Orchestra , the Orchester national de France , the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra .

David Afkham has been chief conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra in Madrid since 2014 .
