FreeMind is free software for visualizing and structuring content (terms, ideas, learning material, meeting results, etc.), which the Fork Freeplane will continue to develop until today (2020). FreeMind itself is up to date from 2014. The method of representing knowledge in these programs is called business mapping , and the resulting documents are called mind maps . Mind maps are useful, for example, as a tool for project management , supportive in structuring learning content or in summarizing the results of a brainstorming session .
properties
Hyperlinks , symbols or images can be inserted into the generated mind maps, and graphical connections between the individual “branches” can also be displayed. With export functions, the results can be saved as XHTML or in the OpenOffice.org Writer format. In addition, the integration of interactive mind maps using Java applets and Flash in websites and especially in various wikis is possible, e.g. B. MediaWiki and WikkaWiki .
FreeMind was developed in the Java programming language for Windows, Mac and Linux. The Java Runtime Environment version 1.5 or higher is required to run.
The XML -based data format (file extension * .mm) allows you to write your own conversion routines using XSLT .
The functionality of the tool is based on the core tasks of mind mapping. The available commercial solutions often extend the mind mapping functionality to include cooperative aspects and centrally managed mind map information databases in the corporate environment, which FreeMind does not do.
The versions of the 0.9.0 series have, among other things, extended export functions, for example the creation of PDF documents or SVG graphics is possible. They also offer the use of filters and attributes, as well as the encryption of individual branches. A calendar function with follow-up is integrated.
With version 1.0 the software got map functionality as well as possibilities for better collaborative work. The beta version 1.1 extends the functionality u. a. to support high-resolution displays.
Forks
At the moment there is only one active fork of FreeMind, Freeplane , and this is specially designed for user - friendliness . The fork SciPlore MindMapping has meanwhile been discontinued in favor of the follow-up project Docear , which also offers reference management for academic needs, but uses Freeplane instead of FreeMind as the basis.
