Freeplane is free software for visualizing and structuring content. The methods of knowledge representation used for this are called mind mapping .

properties

Freeplane is a FreeMind -Fork and, along with its predecessor, is one of the most popular free mind mapping programs. The Java application can be used across platforms on Linux, Windows and on the Mac. The maps created with Freeplane can easily be exchanged and edited on the various platforms. Freeplane can be run locally and also on a portable storage medium such as a USB stick.

The starting point of a Freeplane mind map is an ellipse, the so-called root node, which contains the subject of the visualization. The root node can be expanded to include any number of sub-nodes (child nodes). Each node can be formatted and designed. The nodes can contain texts, images, hyperlinks and much more. The nodes can easily be arranged as desired using the mouse.

Freeplane was named project of the month by SourceForge in July 2014.

The core functions:

  • Nodes can be grouped in almost any way and arranged in complex hierarchies
  • Automatic positioning of the nodes
  • Free positioning of nodes is also possible
  • Classification of nodes by metadata and styles
  • Grouping of nodes through visual containers (cloud) and summary nodes
  • Connections through static and dynamic links
  • Use of label
  • Automatic style assignment
  • Structuring nodes on the basis of content
  • Hide and show content
  • Task management with calendar and reminder function
  • Password protection for entire mind maps and individual nodes through DES encryption
  • Editors for editing the content
  • Multilingual user interface
  • Spell check
  • Fuzzy search with the Damerau-Levenshtein algorithm

The program offers various functions that cannot be found in other programs of this type:

  • Filter toolbar
  • Floating knots
  • Summarizing knot
  • Conditional styles
  • Format panel and attribute panel
  • Use of formulas
  • External user scripts
  • Use of LaTeX in nodes (through JLaTeXMath )

Expandability

Freeplane can be functionally expanded with Groovy and JavaScript scripts. Additional expansion options result from the use of mind map templates that provide formulas (analogous to spreadsheet programs ). In comparison to spreadsheet programs, special applications result from the hierarchical tree structure of mind maps.

Add-ons , which are mostly published on the project page, combine script collections, visual extensions and mind map templates and enable them to be installed easily. Examples of add-ons are the RoAn add-on, which converts Freeplane maps into PowerPoint- like or Prezi- like presentations, and the GTD add-on.

Freeplane, together with JabRef and a PDF viewer, is the basis of Docear , a complex reference management program .

Freeplane on mobile devices

There are several projects that should allow Freeplane maps to be used on mobile devices:

  • DroidPlane
  • Freeplane for Windows Mobile
  • MindBike
