Docear is a free reference management program for searching, managing and creating scientific literature . Docear is released under the GNU General Public License . The application is programmed in Java and is available for Microsoft Windows , Linux and macOS .

particularities

The developers emphasize three special features of Docear on their website.

  • Docear has a "single-section" user interface . This should enable the sorting of PDF files and notes into categories more effectively than with classic user interfaces, which consist of three parts (one for the categories, one for the document list, and one for the notes). The developers point out that with their concept it is possible to sort individual notes into any category, while with other programs usually only entire documents (including notes) can be sorted. Notes from a PDF could also be sorted into separate categories. Users do not create notes directly with Docear, but with any PDF reader such as Adobe Reader or PDF-XChange Viewer . Docear imports and synchronizes the respective notes.
  • Mind maps . Docear makes it possible to design scientific papers . The existing PDFs and notes can be copied directly into the drafts in Docear. This makes it easier to refer to sources than if external software is used. An export of the draft to Microsoft Word or OpenOffice is possible. At least for Microsoft Word there is an add-on, Docear4Word , which enables the automatic creation and formatting of references and almost any citation style (APA, Harvard, ACM, ...).
  • Docear offers a recommendation service for scientific literature. This recommends free downloadable scientific papers from Docear's digital library with 2 million articles.

history

Docear emerged from the SciPlore MindMapping program . SciPlore MindMapping was developed between 2009 and 2011 by Jöran Beel and Bela Gipp as part of their doctoral theses. Stefan Langer and Marcel Genzmehr have also been part of the team since 2011 and SciPlore MindMapping has been renamed Docear. The basic concept of the two tools is the same. However, SciPlore MindMapping is based on the mind mapping software FreeMind , while Docear is based on Freeplane . In addition, the reference management software JabRef is directly integrated in Docear. In addition to the people mentioned, there are a few other participants and Docear is supported by Otto-von-Guericke University , the University of Konstanz and the University of California, Berkeley.
