Carlos Montoya (* 13. December 1903 in Madrid , † 3. March 1993 in Wainscott , New York ) was a Spanish flamenco - guitarist .

life and career

Carlos Montoya was born in Madrid to the nephew of Ramón Montoya , a famous Spanish flamenco composer. He started learning to play the guitar at the age of eight. His uncle felt that he was not talented enough to succeed him and did not want to teach him. Nevertheless, at the age of 14, he accompanied well-known dancers and singers as a guitarist.

In the twenties and thirties he made numerous appearances in Europe, North America and Asia. Most often he played for the dancers La Argentina and La Teresina . After the outbreak of World War II in Europe, he went to the United States and started another tour there with the dancer La Argentina. He later settled in New York and gave his first solo concert in 1948. Later he devoted himself mainly to solo tours. He gave several hundred solo concerts and released over 40 solo albums.

He succeeded in establishing the guitar as an independent instrument in flamenco. Before his successful solo career, she only served in flamenco to support dancers and singers. He can be regarded as one of the outstanding pioneers of today's flamenco, as well as the most successful flamenco guitarist in several decades of the 20th century.
