The United Jazz + Rock Ensemble ( United or UJRE for short ) was a fusion band that existed from 1977 to 2002 and united greats of jazz and jazz rock from all over Europe.
In his approximate five to six brass big band duty system, the ensemble played mostly original compositions. The style of the pieces is mainly related to jazz rock, but other musical styles are also represented. Charlie Mariano in particular occasionally brought ethnic influences into the band's repertoire through his experience with Indian music.
history
In 1975 the director Werner Schretzmeier planned to shoot the youth series Goldener Sonntag for the Süddeutscher Rundfunk . A studio group should be formed for this series. Schretzmeier turned to Wolfgang Dauner , for whom he had previously worked as manager of the avant-garde group et cetera . Because of the target group, the music should be more rock and not "pure" jazz. Dauner approached friends who were more rock-oriented than he was, such as drummer Jon Hiseman . This is how the formation came about, with almost all later members of United.
The individual members of the band had successfully made music in different styles even before the establishment and also parallel to the existence of the United Jazz + skirt ensemble, which is why the UJRE also tape the band leader was named. The technically outstanding artistic position of the musicians is also proven by the fact that some of them taught or still teach at (music) universities. This formative diversity of different, equal musicians, each of whom contributed their own compositions - often from working with their own ensembles - to the repertoire, ensured a lot of variety and gave the band a certain experimental touch.
In 2002, the Farewell Tour 2002 marked the farewell to the group from performing together. This was not least because of the Parkinson's disease by Barbara Thompson founded.
On September 12, 2003, the ensemble got together again by giving a concert in the Alte Oper Frankfurt in honor of Albert Mangelsdorff's 75th birthday . The bid corresponded to the above. last line-up - instead of Ian Carr , Kenny Wheeler played the trumpet, the part of guitarist Volker Kriegel , who died in the same year, remained vacant.
In the long creative phase of the band, 15 albums were released, all under the label Mood Records , which was founded by Wolfgang Dauner, Werner Schretzmeier, Albert Mangelsdorff, Ack van Rooyen , Volker Kriegel and Christoph Wertz . Her debut album Live in the Schützenhaus is still the most successful German jazz record today.
Second generation
2012 saw the revival of the tentet by Dauner: “seasoned professionals of the younger generation” - the saxophonists Klaus Graf and Bobby Stern , the trumpeters Claus Stötter , Tobias Weidinger and Stephan Zimmermann , the trombonist Adrian Mears , guitarist Frank Kuruc and drummer Flo Dauner . Of the old line-up, only bassist Dave King is still there, Dauner died in 2020.
