Bobby Stern

Robert Allen "Bobby" star (* 13. October 1952 in Rochester , New York ) is an American saxophonist of jazz fusion .

Stern comes from a family of musicians; his sister is the singer Jennifer Rush . He learned to play the clarinet as a child and attended High School of Music and Art in his hometown. He also took private lessons from Joel Allard. He also appeared as a harmonica player and singer with blues bands. In 1969 his family moved to Flensburg , where his father Maurice Stern had an engagement at the opera. He studied music in Lübeck and Mainz . Together with Henryk Darlowski , Reinhard Glöder and Lothar Scharf , he founded the rock jazz group Virgo with which he performed at the German Jazz Festival in Frankfurt and toured Central Europe in 1974 and 1975. He also played in the group Sinto and founded the Latin jazz band Head, Heart, and Hands in 1978 with Roy & Elmer Louis , in which he worked with musicians such as Larry Porter , Wolfgang Schmid and Dave King and which released several albums by 1980 . He then formed the Quartet Manifestation with Porter.

After studying at Berklee College of Music , he worked in New York City from 1983 and took lessons from Dave Liebman . He was also involved in recordings by Charly Antolini , Joe Gallardo , Wolfhound (with Wolfgang Schmid and Anne Haigis ) and the Connexion Latina by Rudi Fuesers . He worked in the studio with Marvin Gaye , Boney M , Patrick Gammon and Ronnie Spector ; he toured several times with Peter Maffay and his sister Jennifer Rush. He also played with Thad Jones and Tete Montoliu . In Cologne he worked as a composer, arranger and music producer. He played on the albums Bass Station and BassMo2 with the hip-hop group BassMoBill. In 2002 he taught at the Mainz University of Music , then moved to the south of Florida , where he performed with regional bands. In 2009 he played with the Bobby Stern Rough Jazz Trio. Since 2012 he has been part of Wolfgang Dauner's United Jazz + Rock Ensemble . In 2006 he wrote the textbook The Melodic Minor Handbook, A Jazz Player's Perspective .
