Lothar Scharf

Lothar Scharf (born June 23, 1942 in Darmstadt ; † August 3, 2009 in Greifenstein (Hesse) ) was a German jazz drummer and watercolorist .

Live and act

Scharf studied at the Academy for Tonkunst in Darmstadt and the State University for Music and Performing Arts Berlin , where he graduated with the state examination as an orchestral musician. During his studies he also played with the Long Luis Jazz Babies and in the trio of Volker Kriegel . In 1966 he toured Africa for eight weeks with Gerhard Vohwinkel and his Gentlemen of Jazz for the Goethe Institute . Until 1969 he was a solo timpanist in the Berlin Symphony Orchestra .

In the early 1970s he played with Dzyan with Eddy Marron , and then appeared in the German-American rock jazz group Virgo with Bobby Stern , Henryk Darlowski and Reinhard Glöder . Then he founded his own hardbop quintet with Klaus Werner Pusch , Ralf Rothkegel , Claus Krisch and Dieter Ilg , with whom he also appeared at the festival in San Sebastian . He worked for many years with Rachel Gould and in projects such as the Tenor Conclave with Heinz von Hermann , Wilson de Oliveira , Wolfgang Engstfeld , Walter Gauchel and Jürgen Wuchner . He also played with Johnny Griffin , Don Byas , Pony Poindexter , Leo Wright , Carmell Jones , Knut Kiesewetter , Emil Mangelsdorff and Gustl Mayer . As a percussionist he worked with the Al Martino Big Band and the hr Big Band . He has participated in numerous radio, television, LP and CD productions and has appeared at festivals in Montreux , Zurich, Frankfurt and Moers .

Scharf was also active as a music teacher and made watercolors. Since 1996 he has been a member of the Darmstadt band En Haufe Leit , which plays New Orleans jazz . In addition, he led an organ trio with Steffen Stütz and Udo Brenner. He died during a stay at the Waldhof-Elgershausen Pneumological Clinic .
