Walter Gauchel

Walter Gauchel (born February 20, 1956 near Cologne ) is a German jazz musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , flute ). He lives in Berlin.

Life

After two semesters at the Berlin University of the Arts, Gauchel studied from 1977 to 1982 at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz . During this time he was a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra for a year and toured Europe with it. In 1981 he performed with the orchestra at the Berlin Jazz Days . From 1983 to 1987 he was freelance and also taught at the Berlin-Kreuzberg Music School. From 1987 to 1989 he was a member of the Theater des Westens orchestra . Between 1988 and 1997 he was a member of Alexander von Schlippenbach's Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra , with which he recorded three CDs and also performed in Japan. From 1989 to 2002 he was employed as a soloist with the RIAS Tanzorchester (later RIAS Big Band ) and played there with Dave Brubeck , Lee Konitz , Toots Thielemans , Clark Terry , Natalie Cole and others. Since 2002 he has been a freelance jazz musician. He is a member of Aki Takase's quintet Aki and the Good Boys and appears with her in the formation The Art of Duo . He also has his own formations. He can also be heard on albums with Till Brönner and Susannah McCorkle .

Gauchel's daughter is the German soul musician Peppa Singt .
