Rüdiger Baldauf (born January 31, 1961 in Bensberg ) is a German jazz trumpeter .

Life

Soon in 1980 he graduated from the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium in Bergisch Gladbach . Before that he played in the school orchestra and the school's big band. Then studied Baldauf first at the Cologne Music Academy . Abt Aachen , then through a scholarship from the Karajan Foundation in Berlin classical trumpet. His teachers included Robert Platt and the Dutch jazz trumpeter Ack van Rooyen .

Soon he completed a classical music education, but his preference was early on jazz , funk and soul . As a border crosser between the musical worlds, classical trumpet literature is just as much on Baldauf's agenda as new music by Mauricio Kagel .

Baldauf played with James Brown , Liza Minnelli , Seal , Shirley Bassey , Michael Bublé and the Pro Brass ensemble and various symphony orchestras. He also went on tours with Maceo Parker , Joe Zawinul , Shirley Bassey, Udo Juergens , Jennifer Rush and Barbra Streisand . From 1999 to 2002 he was a member of the United Jazz + Rock Ensemble . He has been a member of the Paul Kuhn Orchestra since 1992 and is a regular guest musician in German radio big bands, especially the WDR Big Band Cologne .

From 1989 to 1999 he was a lecturer in jazz trumpet at the Cologne University of Music, Dept. Aachen. In addition to teaching at trumpet and big band seminars and workshops, he was a guest lecturer at the Folkwang Music Academy in Essen.

The studio musician worked on around 100 studio albums in the late 1980s and 1990s and toured with an orchestra. He was also a member of the RTL Allstars in the first German comedy TV show RTL Saturday Night . From 2003 until the program was discontinued in 2015, he played in Stefan Raab's late night show TV totally as part of the heavytones with which he accompanied many world stars from all genres, such as B. Lionel Richie, the soprano Cecilia Bartoli, or the pop star Jamie Cullum.

In June 2010 he released his first album Own Style under his own leadership with guests from the jazz scene such as Till Brönner , Nils Landgren , Ack van Rooyen , Andy Haderer and Max Mutzke . Here he appeared for the first time as a composer and arranger. In July 2010 the album was number 21 in the “Top 30 Jazz Albums” in the German charts . Since 2010 he can also be found at festivals with his own project, Own Style . a. with Billy Cobham , Eric Marienthal , Jimmy Haslip and Ack van Rooyen. In 2013 he released an album with vocal guests, u. a. with Edo Zanki . His album Jackson Trip (with guest musicians such as Bill Evans and Dean Brown ) was released in September 2017.
