The Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium (NCG) is a state high school in the city of Bergisch Gladbach , named after the German canon lawyer , philosopher, bishop and cardinal Nikolaus von Kues .

The history of the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium began in 1888 with the establishment of the private high school for boys. In 1958 the company moved to today's school building on Reuterstraße near the city center.

The NCG is one of the largest schools in Bergisch Gladbach.

history

1888 to 1957

Today's Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium was founded in 1888 as a private high school for boys . The city took over the sponsorship in 1902. The Provincial School College recognized the school in 1906 as a Progymnasium .

In 1908 a sub-second was completed for the first time . In 1908 the city took over the private secondary girls' school in its household, and in 1909 the new school building on Viktoriastrasse (Odenthaler Strasse) was occupied by both secondary schools. In 1927, the municipal high school for girls was recognized as a lyceum .

The lyceum was dismantled in 1933 and a Realprogymnasium for boys and girls was set up at the same time . In 1937 it was built up to a full grammar school (secondary school), and in 1940 the school leaving examination was held for the first time . Due to the Second World War , teaching came to a temporary standstill in 1945. In November 1945 the school was opened as a municipal grammar school with a modern language branch for boys and girls and a women's high school i. E. reopened, Carl Lenaerts became the headmaster. In 1947 the school alumni association was founded . On July 17, 1956, the foundation stone for the new school building on Reuterstraße was laid.

1958 to 1982

School building on Reuterstraße

On April 1, 1958, a new school building was consecrated by Superintendent Hans Encke and Auxiliary Bishop Wilhelm Cleven . By 1979 the building was expanded to include a gym, auditorium , south wing and pavilions (1970).

In 1965 the trial stage was introduced. In 1966 the school was named Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium . In the same year, the Association of Alumni, Friends and Supporters of the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium Bergisch Gladbach eV was founded as the successor to the Alumni Association that had existed since 1947 .

In 1965 a social science girls' grammar school was set up, which in 1966 had its own management and has been independent since 1972, as the municipal Dietrich Bonhoeffer grammar school for boys and girls. In 1968 the dismantling of the women's high school at the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium was completed with the dismissal of the last class (UII).

Between 1971 and 1973 an attempt to reform the upper level , the so-called NCG model, took place, in the context of which a differentiated intermediate level was introduced in 1972 and a differentiated upper level ( KMK model) in 1973 .

1983 to 2007

The new building from 2005

A new library wing was built and opened in 1993. In 1995 the cafeteria operated by volunteers was opened, which was rebuilt in 2011 and redesigned for around € 400,000. At the beginning of the 2004/2005 school year, the last G9 year started school. On September 21, 2004, Mayor Maria Theresia Opladen and headmaster Norbert Liesenfeld broke the first sod for a new wing. The building designed by the architect Jürgen Kreft with 10 classrooms and a music hall was occupied on August 22, 2005.

In 2006, after the pavilion ("west wing") was demolished, a new schoolyard with ball game fields and climbing rocks was built. At the beginning of the 2005/2006 school year, the G8 Abitur was introduced at the NCG. The wind orchestra of the NCG, directed from the beginning by Joachim Zinzius, gave an anniversary concert on November 18, 2005 to mark its 25th anniversary.

Since 2008

With the premiere on February 25, 2010, students of the NCG performed the annual cultural performance "Kultursplitter" on the stage of the school auditorium for the 25th time. On April 15, 2010, three chemistry rooms equipped with the latest school laboratory and safety technology were inaugurated.

On February 28, 2012, the student body demonstrated for the preservation of the current school location in Reuterstraße in Bergisch Gladbach's " Bildungslandschaft Nord ". A referendum under the motto "Education needs space: The NCG must stay!" In June / July 2012 produced well over 8,000 signatures and thus almost twice as many as required. The city's “Action Plan Schools 2018” took up the demand and now envisaged the maintenance of the school site and its renovation from 2013 onwards.

As part of a piano concert on January 10, 2013, the school's Steinway grand, which had been completely overhauled after more than four decades, was inaugurated and the festival year for the school's 125th anniversary opened.

In October 2014, plans began to renovate the school buildings from the 1960s. The renovation is to begin in spring 2020. For financial reasons, a completely new building will be dispensed with and only the oldest part of the school, the north wing, will be demolished and replaced by a new building. Administration offices, the teachers' room and a total of 17 school classes will be housed in containers for the construction period.
