Andreas Zumach (born July 30, 1954 in Cologne ) is a German journalist and publicist . Since 1988 he has been Switzerland and UN correspondent for the daily newspaper (taz) based at the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva . He also works as a freelance correspondent for other German and English language print and radio media.

Life

Andreas Zumach is the son of the teacher and women's association functionary Hildegard Zumach. After childhood, first in Cologne and later in Bergisch Gladbach and the Abitur at the local Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium , he completed a two-year alternative civilian service as a conscientious objector with the action atonement at the United Farm Workers (UFW) agricultural workers' union in the USA. After his return to Germany, he applied the experience he gained there with the consumer boycott in initiatives against the baby milk powder manufacturer Nestlé . Together with his mother, he then devoted himself to the fight against apartheid in South Africa .

Zumach studied social work, economics and journalism at the University of Cologne from 1975 to 1979 . From 1979 to 1981 he worked as an editor for the newspaper Die Neue in Berlin (West). From 1981 to 1987 he worked as a consultant for the Action Reconciliation Service for Peace . In this function he was responsible for the organization of the Bonn peace demonstrations held from 1981 and acted as spokesman for the coordination committee of the nationwide peace movement . In the meantime he was a member of the security policy commission of the party executive of the SPD .

Zumach focuses on issues of international law, human rights policy, security policy, arms control and international organizations.

In 2009 he was awarded the Göttingen Peace Prize; Zumach is now the jury chairman for this award.

Among other things, Zumach is an active member of the advisory board of the Association for Justice between Israelis and Palestinians .
