history

In 1980 the group was founded by Claude McKnight as " Gentlemen's Estate Quartet " at Oakwood College (an Adventist school in Huntsville, Alabama). She mainly performed barbershop vocals. A few months later, Mark Kibble overheard the group singing in a college men's bathroom and spontaneously joined in. The group practiced there because of the favorable acoustics (source: www.shmf.de). Kibble, who had known Claude McKnight since childhood in Buffalo, New York, then became a new member of the band. The group continued to expand when Mervyn Warren became the sixth member. The group name changed through "Sounds of Distinction" and "Alliance" to "Take 6" . Before that, it had always been found that a different group was already using the same name. Cedric Dent, Alvyn Chea and David Thomas were later added.

They became known to a wider audience when the well-known producer Quincy Jones took them under his wing in 1989 for his CD “ Back on the Block ”, when they sang a cappella piece with Al Jarreau , Ella Fitzgerald , Bobby McFerrin (Wee B. Dooinit ) and an instrumental piece by the Brazilian singer and composer Ivan Lins (Septembro - Brazilian Wedding Song) with their harmonious singing.

In 1991 Mervyn Warren left the band and was replaced by Mark Kibble's younger brother Joey Kibble.

Create

The members of Take 6 produce and arrange the majority of their pieces and CDs themselves.

They all belong to the Protestant Free Church of the Seventh-day Adventists . Above all, they want to encourage other people with their songs. Her music is always positive and varied and ranges from gospel and jazz to pop and soul.

Take 6 is characterized by vocal conciseness and clarity, frequent virtuoso melisms and an exceptionally clean intonation even for professional vocal groups, as well as an astonishing homogeneity of the group sound. Take 6 can reproduce these well-known features from the recordings live in concert with seemingly playful ease.

Although they can be heard mostly a cappella, they all play a musical instrument and sometimes accompany themselves musically on stage: Mark Kibble (keyboard), David Thomas (bass guitar), Joey Kibble (keyboard, guitar), Alvin Chea (keyboard), Cedric Dent (piano, keyboard)
