The Roaring Silence is the seventh album by the British rock band Manfred Mann's Earth Band . It was released by Bronze Records in 1976 .
The album
After the album Nightingales & Bombers , guitarist and singer Mick Rogers left the band, and he is back on this album as a background singer. For him came Dave Flett on guitar and Chris Thompson as singer. Like the previous album, The Roaring Silence begins with a cover version from Bruce Springsteen's Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ , here Blinded by the Light . In the second piece Singing the Dolphin Through is Barbara Thompson heard as a guest musician with a saxophone solo in the rejection. The instrumental piece Waiter There's a Yawn in My Ear , dominated by Manfred Mann's Moog playing, was recorded live and edited afterwards.
The Road to Babylon begins with choir singing and is also reminiscent of Father of Day, Father of Night from the album Solar Fire with its sublime mood . It is based on the Canon By the Waters of Babylon (German also Friedenskanon: nach This Erde ), the origins of which can be traced back to Philip Hayes (1738–1797) and the original text of which comes from Psalm 137 . Starbird's theme is borrowed from the finale of the orchestral suite to the ballet “ The Firebird ” by Igor Stravinsky ; it is taken over almost true to the note, but rhythmically shifted and alienated. The album ends with the quiet ballad Questions , in which the composer named Chris Slade reverted to a piano piece by Franz Schubert (Impromptu G flat major, D889.3).
With Chris Thompson as singer, the Earth Band Spirits in the Night from Nightingales & Bombers recorded again. This version was released as a single in 1977 and was also adopted on the 1977 versions of the US album pressings, which can be recognized by the blue cover compared to the 1976 version. It is also on the 1998 CD release of The Roaring Silence as a bonus track.
reception
The Roaring Silence was the Earth Band's most commercially successful album to date. It reached number 10 in the British and US charts and number 26 in Germany. The single Blinded by the Light was released at number 1 on the US single charts.
Mike DeGagne writes on allmusic , The Roaring Silence basks in veiled poetry, cryptic but at the same time fascinating, close to the complexity of progressive rock, but far from its self-importance and he considers the album to be the best performance of the band both commercially and artistically . He gave the album four stars out of five.
The magazine eclipsed describes the album in its book Rock - The Complete Works of the Greatest Rock Acts in Check: all albums, all songs (part 1) as a perfect mix of the prog album Solar Fire and the 1978 watch , on pop prevail. Consequently, the magazine awards the work the highest category of Kaufrausch and it lands in third place in the overall view of all Manfred Mann's Earth Band albums.
