The Quireboys are an English rock 'n' roll - Hard Rock - and glam rock - band .

history

The foundation stone of the band was laid in 1984 by the then 17-year-old singer Jonathan 'Spike' Gray , who moved from Newcastle upon Tyne to London and met the guitarist Guy Bailey there. Next in the group was bass player Nigel Mogg (nephew of UFO singer Phil Mogg ), who was soon followed by drummer Paul Hornby (who founded The Dogs D'Amour a little later ) and Chris Johnstone on the piano.

The Queerboys started their careers at the Marquee Club and quickly built a fan base in London and the surrounding area with their hard rock, which is strongly influenced by rhythm'n'blues. After receiving an offer in 1987 to play at the Reading Festival in case they change their name, they renamed themselves The Quireboys .

In 1989 they supported Guns N 'Roses at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. Also appearances as opening act for Hanoi Rocks and Yngwie Malmsteen were completed. When Ozzy's wife Sharon Osbourne took over the management shortly afterwards, The Quireboys were signed to EMI for their debut A Bit Of What You Fancy . It was released in 1990 after being promoted by the single 7 O'Clock in 1989 . On the tour for this album, the band played with Soundgarden , Iggy Pop and the LA Guns concerts, among others .

On their tours around the globe they recorded their first live album "Recorded Around The World" and then started working on the second album. Together with producer Bob Rock they recorded "Bitter Sweet & Twisted", but got lost in the emerging grunge wave. Although they played with Guns N 'Roses on the "Use Your Illusion" tour, the formation fell apart in 1993.

The first serious reunion came when Spike, guitarist Guy and bassist Nigel dared to restart in 2001. The third album "This Is Rock'n'Roll" followed, on which Luke Bossendorfer made his debut on guitar and Martin Henderson on drums. However, the album was released on the Sanctuary Records label. Jason Bonham stepped in for the subsequent appearances in England . This was followed in 2002 with 100% Live - in 2002 a live album for the tour. In 2004 the album Well Oiled was released , with Paul Guerin (guitar), Pip Mailing (drums) and Keith Weir (keyboards) playing. Another label change was made, because the album was released via SPV . In the same year the band played for the first time at the Wacken Open Air . In the following years bassist Nigel Mogg left the band again and was replaced by Jimi Cruthley. With this line-up, the album Homewreckers & Heartbreakers was released in 2008, which was released without a record label. The next album, Halfpenny Dancer, followed in 2009 , this time with Damon Williams on bass, Phil Martini on drums and Jerkin Crocus as the record label. In 2009 their debut album A Bit Of What You Fancy was re-released. On the following tour, the band performed at the Bang Your Head Festival in Balingen, among others . In 2010 the live album Live In London followed, but it contained the same songs as the live album 100% Live - 2002 from 2002. 2012 the band played at the download festival .

In 2013 the band released the album Beautiful Curse on the label Off Yer Rocka , on which Simon Hanson plays the drums and no bass player is specified. In addition, the band played at the Sweden Rock Festival that same year . Drummer Pip Mailing returned for the 2014 album Black Eyed Sons . Nick Mailing was also the new bass player.

A blues set on the occasion of a performance at the Ramblin 'Man festival led to the idea of recording a complete album with covers of blues classics. It was released in 2017 under the name White Trash Blues .

To this day, mainly Spike and guitarist Guy Griffin are behind the band. Up to the 2004 album Well Oiled , bassist Nigel Mogg was also one of the leading figures in the band. The band is known for many line-up changes. However, the band could not build on the debut album from 1990, which climbed to number 2 in the UK charts. With Paul Guerin and Keith Weir, however, the band has found two long-term members again.
