Messin ' is the third music album by the British rock band Manfred Mann's Earth Band . It was recorded at Maximum Studios in London and released in 1973.

The album

Messin ' contains the mix of cover versions and their own tracks that is typical for the Earthband. These are songs by Bob Dylan , Dr. John and the Australian band Chain. With their Black and Blue via a chain gang from Australian history, the Earthband covers an authentic Australian blues . The title track was written by Mike Hugg, who played with Manfred Mann for two years in the jazz rock formation Chapter Three . A version of the song from this period was only released in 2005 under the full title Messin 'Up the Land on the compilation Odds & Sods - Mis-takes & Out-takes . The piece Cloudy Eyes , written by Manfred Mann, was originally intended for a musical that was never completed.

reception

Robert Christgau gave the album the good rating A- and Buddah is for him the religious song of the year despite the misspelling.

Bruce Eder of allmusic writes Manfred Mann would venture into the realms of Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson on Buddah , while the rest of the band emulate Deep Purple . He finds it astonishing that despite this album it took two years and a Bruce Springsteen song before the band really became known (with the album Nightingales & Bombers and the song Spirits in the Night ). He gave the album four stars out of five.
