Tom Shanklin (born November 24, 1979 in Harrow , England ) is a former Welsh rugby union player who played for the Cardiff Blues and for the Welsh national team. He was part of the team that won the Six Nations Grand Slam in 2005 and 2008 . Shanklin played in the inner three-quarters position .
Career
In 2001 Shanklin made his debut for Wales against Japan . At that time he was playing for the Saracens in the Guinness Premiership . He started his career with the London Welsh . Having grown up in England, he was able to choose between the English and Welsh national teams. Ultimately, he followed his father Jim, who is from Wales. With the emergence of the Cardiff Blues, he moved to the Celtic League . At this point he had already gained experience in international rugby. So he was in the squad for the 2003 World Cup , where he scored an attempt against the All Blacks .
At the Six Nations 2005 , he and Gavin Henson formed an outstanding duo as the inner three-quarters and thus had a large share in the Grand Slam win. As a result, he was also nominated for the British and Irish Lions . However, he was injured before the tour started, so he could not actively participate in the games. As a result of this injury, he was out almost a full season, so that Shanklin's early retirement could not be ruled out. In the next season he was part of the Welsh squad again, but disappointing Six Nations and the preliminary round at the World Cup followed . The team fought back under new coach Warren Gatland at the Six Nations 2008 and was able to secure the Grand Slam again. Shanklin was used in all games. In 2009 he won the EDF Energy Cup with the Blues .
On April 21, 2009 he was nominated again for a tour of the British and Irish Lions . However, due to a serious shoulder injury, he will not be able to participate. Two months after knee surgery, Shanklin announced his immediate resignation on April 21, 2011.
