John Philip "Bakkies" Botha (born September 22, 1979 in Newcastle ) is a South African rugby union player who plays in the second row for the South African national team and for RC Toulon . In 2007 he became world champion with the "Springboks" .

Career

Before making his debut for South Africa's men's national team in 2002, Botha played against France for the U19, U23 and reserve national teams . Since then, he has formed one of the best second- tier partnerships in international rugby with Victor Matfield . Both have played together in the national team 46 times, and they belong to the same provincial association and franchise. Botha said of their relationship:

Sometimes I feel we know each other better than we know our wives.
Sometimes I think we know each other better than our wives.

Botha was part of the South African national team for the 2003 World Cup , where he put three attempts . At the Tri Nations in the following year he won the second title with South Africa after 1998 . He played his second world championship in 2007 , which was won. At the Tri Nations 2008 he reached his 50th international match in the historic win against New Zealand in Dunedin . Due to an injury, he could not take part in the next tournament. He returned in the autumn of that year to win with South Africa against all British national teams and, among other things, to inflict the biggest home defeat in history for England . In 2009 he was part of the South Africa squad when it met the British and Irish Lions . The Springboks won the series against the Lions 2-1. Then succeeded the third title with the Tri Nations.

With the Bulls, for which Botha competed in the Super 14 since 2002, he won the championship in 2007, 2009 and 2010. He could win the Currie Cup four times. On the 2011/12 season he moved to France for RC Toulon .
