Michael Phillips (born August 29, 1982 in Carmarthen ) is a Welsh rugby union player . He plays as the scrum half for the Welsh national team and Aviron Bayonnais .

Career

Philipps grew up on a farm near St. Clears , Carmarthenshire . He gained his first experience as a rugby player at the local club Whitland RFC, where his older brother was also active. He joined the newly formed Scarlets provincial team in 2003 via the Carmarthen RFC . In the same year he made his debut for the national team against Romania . In 2005 he moved to the Cardiff Blues . After two seasons there, he signed a contract with rival team Ospreys , where he earns an estimated £ 180,000 a year.

Phillips was part of the Welsh squad for the 2007 World Cup . He was substituted on in the games against Canada , Australia and Fiji . He played against Japan from the start and also scored a try .

Even under the new national coach Warren Gatland, Phillips is one of the permanent staff. So he was used in all five games of the Six Nations 2008 , in which the Welsh won the Grand Slam . He succeeded in the game-winning attempt in the opening game against England . In March of that year he was injured in the semi-finals of the EDF Energy Cup , which the Ospreys won in the end. He was then out for half a year, but got fit again in time to take part in the Six Nations 2009 , where he was used in all games.

Phillips was nominated for the British and Irish Lions Tour to South Africa in 2009. He was used in all three games of the series in the starting lineup and put in a try in the first game.

After playing exclusively for Welsh teams, Phillips moved to the 2011/12 season for the French club Aviron Bayonnais .
