Lee Byrne (born June 1, 1980 in Bridgend ) is a former Welsh rugby player . He was active for various Welsh clubs as well as the French club ASM Clermont Auvergne and the Welsh national team . Mostly he was used as a goalkeeper , but he could also play as an outside three quarters.

Career

Byrne played for national national teams while he was still in school and began his career at Bridgend Athletic. After his engagement at Tondu RFC, he moved to the Llanelli Scarlets in 2003 , where he made good appearances for the national team in the Celtic League and the Heineken Cup . A serious knee injury initially set him back a little in 2004. However, he became part of the squad for the first time in November 2005 when Wales lost 3:41 to the All Blacks in the Millennium Stadium . In the following win against Fiji and in the loss to South Africa , Byrne was also used.

In 2006 he moved to the Ospreys, in his first season he won the Celtic League with this team. Despite this successful season, he was not considered for the squad for the World Cup . After the dismissal of Gareth Jenkins and the appointment of Warren Gatland as the new national coach Byrne plays an important role again. In the 2008 Six Nations Championship one succeeded to attempt the away win in England and two more in the game against Italy . At this tournament he managed the Grand Slam with Wales .

On April 21, 2009 he was nominated by Ian McGeechan for the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa . In the first game of the series, he injured himself so that he could not participate in the two final games.

In the 2011/12 season, Byrne moved to the French club ASM Clermont Auvergne , with whom he was in the final of the European Rugby Champions Cup in 2013 . In 2014 he moved back to Wales and played six games for Newport Gwent Dragons in his final season . In April 2015, he retired due to a shoulder injury.

In 2017, Byrne published his autobiography The Byrne Identity .
