Pierre Johan Spies (born June 8, 1985 in Pretoria ) is a South African rugby union player who plays as a winger and number eight for the South African national team , in the Currie Cup for the Blue Bulls and in the Super 14 for the Bulls .

Career

As a teenager, Spies pursued numerous sports such as athletics , swimming , tennis and cricket . Among other things, he became the South African champion in discus throwing and qualified for the youth world championships in the 100 m sprint. His best time on this track is 10.7 seconds.

In 2005, Spies first appeared for the Bulls at the age of 19. After only a year as a professional rugby player, he was appointed to the squad of the South African national team. He made his debut against Australia . He was considered a sure candidate for a place in the ranks of the "Springboks" for the 2007 World Cup , but he could not take part in the tournament due to blood clots in his lungs . He returned the following year and played an outstanding season. He was voted best player in South Africa and was part of the team that won against all British national teams in November 2008. In 2009 he was part of the South African squad for the British and Irish Lions Tour . The Springboks won the series 2-1 and also secured the third title at the Tri Nations in the same year.

Private life

Spies has two sisters and has been married to Juanne Weidemann since December 2008. His father of the same name also played for the Blue Bulls. He died shortly before his son made his national team debut.
