Kapowairua is a small settlement in the Far North District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name Kapowairua was chosen for the location of the settlement because, according to a Māori legend, the souls of the deceased are captured there before they embark on the long journey to their place of ultimate rest via Cape Reinga . " Kapo " means something like to catch and " wairua " means soul .
geography
The settlement is located around 17 km east of Cape Reinga at the east end of Spirits Bay . It is the northernmost settlement in New Zealand, apart from a permanently manned station on Raoul Island . Kapowairua can be reached from the Waitiki Landing settlement on New Zealand State Highway 1 via an approximately 14 km long gravel road. The next larger settlement is Te Kao, about 27 km to the south, and Kaitaia as the nearest town would be 85 km away.
