Timetrip - The Curse of the Viking Witch (original title: Vølvens forbandelse ) is a Danish youth film with elements from the fantasy and historical film from 2009. The director was Mogens Hagedorn , who made his feature film debut with this film.

action

Valdemar and Sille are siblings. When her parents leave for the weekend, Valdemar is supposed to take care of his younger sister. Instead, he goes for a jaunt with his friends in his father's new Audi . He comes off the road and hits a rock. Nothing happens to him or his friends, but the front of the car is broken. He has the car brought to a workshop and hopes that they will get the car repaired by Monday afternoon.

The next day, Valdemar goes on a school trip to the university's physics institute, where researcher Benedict gives a lecture on wormholes and time travel . When he stands bored at the drinks machine, he discovers a strange injury in Benedict and follows him into his laboratory. The injury has disappeared, but Benedict shows him a time machine. Benedict puts him in the year 963 for 10 minutes . There he meets Jotan, who looks very much like Benedict. A witch enchants him with the help of a crucifix so that he can no longer die and lives forever. To do this, she separates the Jesus figure from the cross. The spell can only be canceled if both symbols are reunited. Back in the present, Valdemar tells Benedict, who now admits to be Jotan and wants to be released from the curse. He already has the Jesus figure. He offers Valdemar money to get the crucifix, but Valdemar refuses.

The garage gets wind that Valdemar wants to have the car repaired behind his father's back and demands 100,000 crowns . Reluctantly, he accepts Benedict's offer. But his little sister followed him and so both end up in the past. That evening, Jotan convinces the King of Denmark, Harald Blauzahn , to convert to Christianity , which may give Denmark a great future, but anger the pagan witch so much that she flees and curses the king. But the crucifix has disappeared.

Benedict sends the two of them back to 1157 , where they meet Waldemar I , who is currently having a "peace festival" with his competitor Sven III. and Knud Lavard . The event, which later went down in history as the Roskilder Blood Festival , is disrupted by the witch. Waldemar I can escape with the help of Valdemar and Sille and hides. But he refuses to give the crucifix as a reward. When the witch tracks down the three, they are saved by Jotan, who is a Knight Templar at the time . Back in the present, Benedict gives up because he no longer wants to endanger the children's lives.

But Sille starts research on his own and discovers the cross in Finderup in 1286 . The owner is King Erik V. Ville travels back in time on his own. When Valdemar notices this, he seeks out Benedict, who also puts him in the same time. Erik V is said to be murdered that night. Behind this plan is the witch who snatches the crucifix. The children can overwhelm her, but she was given information beforehand that will enable her to track down Benedict in the future. She has tied herself to the same spell as Benedict, but she is by no means tired of her life.

The witch is currently an architect and has restored a famous castle. The crucifix is incorporated there. With the repaired car, Valdemart, Sille and Benedict set off and can bring Crucifix and Jesus together. Benedict is released from his curse and looks forward to his remaining years.

criticism

The film was generally rated as good. In particular, the loving staging and the integration of important historical data “without a pedagogical finger” would set the Danish production apart from the usual teen films. Instead, as is usual for Scandinavian cinema, the film focuses on the relationship between the siblings, who notice what they have in each other during the action.

"Without overstraining the educational aspect," Timetrip - The Curse of the Viking Witch "could be described as a history lesson in the guise of a gripping adventure film. (...)" Timetrip "is not least about the maturation process of Valdemars, a coming-of-age his sister plays a decisive role. The original script (Ina Bruhn) and direction also develop this humanistic component of the plot in a completely unsentimental way. The somewhat subdued pace of the film has a beneficial effect after countless over-the-top teen clothes from the USA, and perhaps it is precisely this relaxed time management that increases the effect of the actionist highlights. "

- Jens Hinrichsen : film service

"The feature film debut of the Danish director Mogens Hagedorn is an exciting adventure that at the same time informs about Danish history and examines the philosophical question of whether eternal life is really desirable."
