Northern Lights - Murderers Without Remorse (Original: Den som dræber ) is a crime series co-produced by Denmark and Germany . The Danish television broadcaster TV 2 is responsible for the production . It was first broadcast on German television on October 14, 2011 on ZDFneo and on October 16, 2011 on ZDF . The focus of the series is a Copenhagen investigator duo, which consists of the police officer Katrine Ries Jensen and the psychologist Thomas Schaeffer. The main female character portrayed by Laura Bach is a self-confident investigator. The main male role is created in the style of a profiler and is played by Jakob Cedergren .
On October 25, 2011, Danish television broadcaster TV 2 announced that the series would be discontinued due to poor audience ratings and criticism of the violence. At the end of the series, the film "The Shadows of the Past" had already been shot. While it was broadcast on television in Germany immediately following the series on November 20, 2011, it premiered in Denmark as a feature film on March 15, 2012.
In 2019, the Danish streaming provider Viaplay published an offshoot with the title Darkness - Shadows of the Past .

The focus of the individual criminal cases is the investigation into serial murders. The setting is the area around Copenhagen . At the beginning of the series, Katrine Ries Jensen was recently appointed deputy head of a Copenhagen homicide squad. In the course of the crime series, on the one hand, she enjoys special trust on the part of the head of the homicide squad, Magnus Bisgaard, on the other hand, she often has to assert herself against her superior. Her colleague Schaeffer is a psychologist and, at the beginning of the series, leaves his work at a chair at Copenhagen University to work regularly for the police. As a profiler, he complements the forensic investigations of Jensen and her other team. Schaeffer is regularly criticized by the head of the homicide squad because of his intuitive methods. The series also deals with the private lives of the two main characters. Schaeffer's family life and separation from his wife are discussed, as is Ries Jensen's past as a victim of domestic violence.

In Germany, the series was shown in a cut version with six instead of twelve episodes and therefore has a running time of 90 minutes per film. criticism
The Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung sees the series in the tradition of Danish and Swedish crime formats such as Inspector Beck and summarizes a broad response from the critics: from accusations of stereotypes and clichés to praise for suspense and scripts.
On the crime couch , the series was praised for "original, brutal and rather shrewd crimes".
