action

In a winterly snow-covered northern Swedish settlement, a young, confused-looking man named Drengen brutally kills an older couple for no apparent reason. He ends up in a psychiatric institution for violent criminals. Against the opposition of the supervisory staff, the heavy cases like Drengen in preventive detention will lock up, the young psychologist Lisbeth tried the social skills to strengthen the occupants by dealing with pets. In fact, the closed Drengen develops a close bond with a red cat entrusted to him, whom he calls Valde. When a jealous fellow prisoner throws the cat over the prison wall, Drengen takes revenge and stabs him. Lisbeth has to break off her failed therapy concept and leaves the recovered cat to Drengen in order to say goodbye one last night. But Valde no longer recognizes Valde and believes he can hear the voice of God in the purring of the cat, which commands him to commit suicide. Drengen strangles the cat and then tries to suffocate himself with a plastic bag, but he is saved in time.

The psychologist asks Pastor Helen for help in dissuading Drengen from divine orders. But Helen does not get through to Drengen, who refuses any contact with the outside world and only keeps mumbling the name of the cat. She realizes that Lisbeth is primarily interested in her research, for which she exposes her patients to extreme situations. Nevertheless, she dares the experiment of being locked in Drengen's cell at night with the help of the supervisor Knud in order to make contact with him. Indeed, the young man begins to speak. He tells of his childhood with a mother who neglected him. He spent a few happy months in the house of his grandfather, who was also called Valde, and told him about the "hour of the lynx", the 25th hour in which anything could happen, and the "divine harp", the telephone lines over which the voice is transmitted God's to be heard. Years later he tried to find the house of his brief happiness. When he met an old couple instead of his grandfather, he saw them as intruders into his paradise and killed them. After the pastor said goodbye to Drengen that morning, he hanged himself in his cell. Helen makes sure that Drengen is buried with his cat. A year later she resigned because she herself began to see God in the form of a red cat. She visits the empty house of Drengen's grandfather, around which a cat of the same kind roams.

reception

At the 55th Nordic Film Festival in Lübeck , In der Luchs received the church's Interfilm Prize endowed with 2500 euros. The reasoning stated that the director asked questions about the motive of a murder, about “forgiveness and hope” in a “refined narrative” and was not afraid to “also depict brutal violence and unusual spiritual connections.” Cinema called the film a “ [i] ntensive, touching psychological puzzle "and praised the" exciting, sensitively staged journey into a confused soul, the resolution of which touches, even if it does not explain everything. " Kino.de, on the other hand, criticized the film for being" well constructed "despite good acting performances work and "cross the line to unbelievable time and again". The Danish daily Berlingske described the film as a "quiet and strong drama". According to Politiken , the film demands a certain "self-conquest" from the viewer, but if one abandons himself to his mood and mysticism, it creates a "film experience beyond the usual that has a long lasting effect."
