Rebel Meets Rebel is a crossover project by the American outlaw country musician David Allan Coe and some members of the heavy metal band Pantera , namely Dimebag Darrell , Vinnie Paul and Rex Brown .
Coe and Darrell met in Fort Worth in the late 1990s and found many similarities in their work in their respective musical genres, which is why they decided to work together. Over a period of four years, the members met again and again whenever they happened to be in Dallas to work on song material. Most of the lyrics come from Coe, while the musical arrangements were developed by the Abbott brothers. The finished pieces were recorded at Chasin Jason Studios in Dalworthington Gardens, Texas. Drummer Vinnie Paul acted as producer.
When Dimebag Darrell was shot dead by a crazy fan on December 8, 2004 at a concert by his band Damageplan , these songs became an unintentional legacy. His brother Vinnie Paul put together an album from the recorded material as a "healing process" and finally released the self-titled album on May 2, 2006 on his own label "Big Vin Records".
Already in the first week 26,000 copies were sold in the USA, which put the album at number 38 on the US Billboard charts. Less than two months later, sales had increased to 59,000 units.
