Location of Niedersgegen in Rhineland-Palatinate

Nieders Gegen is a district of the municipality of Körperich in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . The former manor village houses around 100 residents and is located in the German-Luxembourgish nature park .

history

According to a deed of donation from 783, the settlement area over the entire Gaybachgrund probably bore the name Geine , because as such it is mentioned as geine an der geihe . This gave rise to the name Jegen , later Gegen . For this purpose, separate focal points with place names were formed, in the north Obersgegen , in the south Niedersgegen. In 1541, Niedersgegen was first mentioned in a document with this name.

The sex of the von Jegen that the counts of Vianden lehnspflichtig were, had a farm in the 15th century in Lower counter. Their traces are lost, however, and the goods were owned by other noble families. In 1816 the leather manufacturer Richard from Clervaux acquired the houses and lands of Niedersgegen by marriage. He built a tannery in 1822 , which resulted in an economic boom in the town. In addition, the landlord had other buildings built for himself and his descendants.

On June 7, 1969, the previously independent community of Niedersgegen was dissolved and from this, together with the also dissolved communities of Körperich, Obersgegen and Seimerich, today's local community of Körperich was re-formed. Before that, on July 1, 1967, the community of Kewenig Castle was incorporated into Niedersgegen.

The chapel was given to the community as a gift by the Bouvier family in 1923. The ground floor of the residential tower was combined with the church building in the course of a renovation in 1967.
