The Hansagymnasium (also Hansa-Gymnasium , until 1941 Oberrealschule am Hansaring ) was opened in 1899 as a municipal commercial school. From May 1, 1901 to 1907, the building, built in the neo-Gothic style , was also used by the newly established Cologne University of Commerce, which was founded by the Cologne industrialist and politician Gustav von Mevissen . From 1925 the school was run as an upper secondary school. The Hansagymnasium is located in the Neustadt-Nord district of Cologne on Hansaring .

history

Gustav von Mevissen and the commercial college

Gustav Mevissen in 1848. Lithograph after a drawing by Valentin Schertle.
The building before the First World War

In the 18th century the idea of a Rhenish commercial college arose for the first time. From 1776 to 1778 the project of an "Action Academy" was considered in the Bergisch state capital Düsseldorf. Ten years later, a plea for such an institution was made in Cologne, because after the closure of the old University of Cologne by the French authorities in 1798, the city had developed into a trading center without an intellectual center. It was above all von Mevissen who, as early as 1847, took up the idea of helping the city back to a higher education institution and promoted it. Since there had been a university in Bonn since 1818, he initially thought of a technical university, which was not set up in Cologne but in Aachen (1863-1870).

In 1866 he again suggested the “Foundation of Commercial Academies” in a memorandum , which he linked on the occasion of the golden wedding anniversary of the imperial couple who were personally acquainted with him on June 11, 1879 with the announcement of a foundation for a university fund of initially 100,000 marks : “The to founding educational establishment must be mentally and in the method of teaching at the same level with the university, mainly take the curriculum the wide sphere of working life for accusation and the teaching of this widely ramified material at the same time emphasize the peculiar conditions of employment. " in addition to the economics demanded by Mevissen also teach the following areas: "World history and history of the German Empire, physics and mathematics, encyclopedia of the philosophical sciences, literature and art history."

According to Mevissen's ideas, the new university should not only serve to train prospective businesspeople, but also to provide advanced training for those who were already working. After the city of Leipzig had founded a commercial academy and Frankfurt am Main was also considering such a foundation, the Cologne city council decided in the wake of the general wave of many new business schools between 1898 and 1919 in the German Reich on June 12, 1900, on Mevissen's proposals To be heard. Mevissen's plan became a reality with the city of 260,000 Marks to one million Marks - as requested by Mevissen - and meanwhile increased through endowments and a legacy from the Mevissens will. After approval by the Kingdom of Prussia on September 19, the new university was opened on May 1, 1901 in the main wing of the previously built commercial school. This commercial college was then transferred to the University of Cologne , founded by Konrad Adenauer's initiative , in 1919 together with the Academy for Practical Medicine founded in 1904 and the University for Communal and Social Administration founded in 1912 .

During the First World War , there was an overhang of female students due to the conscription and the voluntary reports for service at the weapon. In 1914, 21 of the 30 graduates from the commercial college were male and nine were female; in 1915 the ratio had changed to 12:23, in the third year of the war it changed to 5:11 and in 1917 the ratio of the sexes was 3:18. From 1914 to 1918 the proportion of women ranged between 66 and 86 percent. Of the 101 business teachers in Cologne, 56 were Catholic and 40 Protestant, the remaining five must have been Jewish; they mostly came from (petty) bourgeois backgrounds.

Change to high school

In the first few years of the university's operations, the rooms in the building were sufficient for both facilities. At the beginning, the commercial college had six professors and other guest lecturers , and the number of students enrolled in the first semester was only 68. The number of students grew rapidly in the following years, with 304 enrolled in 1905 . Due to the ongoing influx, the premises were no longer sufficient, so that in 1907 the commercial college was relocated to a new, larger building in the Römerpark at the opposite end of the Cologne rings (today Cologne University of Applied Sciences ).

At the beginning of the school year 1925/1926, a German secondary school was attached to the commercial secondary school . In the autumn of 1926, the City Council of Cologne voted to expand the previous commercial secondary school into an upper secondary school, which was named Städtische Oberrealschule am Hansaring . The council also agreed to the proposal to convert the German secondary school affiliated to the institution into an upper secondary school. In February 1930 the first oral final examination took place at the commercial secondary school. In February 1931, 19 senior primary students passed the secondary school leaving examination for the first time and the secondary school was also recognized as a full institution. With this, the expansion of the old commercial secondary school into an upper secondary school was completed. It was called Oberrealschule am Hansaring with Aufbauschule i. E. Commercial class .

Decline and rise

The number of teaching staff decreased from 38 to 28 between 1934 and 1940. Due to the conscription to the Wehrmacht, only twelve teachers were active at the school in 1944. An average of 400 to 500 students were taught, the majority of whom were Catholic. In 1936 the school was awarded the HJ flag due to the almost complete coverage of the student body in the Hitler Youth .

The school building, still in use today, which was badly damaged in 1943 and 60 percent destroyed at the end of the war, was rebuilt or repaired. After the war, the school became a boys' science school. This gender segregation came to an end in 1974 when girls were also admitted to the Hansa High School.

In 1958 the Hansagymnasium's irregular school newspaper, the Hansekogge (abbreviated: HAKO ) named after the school 's symbol of the same name, was founded, making it one of the oldest school newspapers in the Federal Republic of Germany. She has already won the Silver Pen a few times . Henryk M. Broder , a student at the Hansagymnasium in the 1960s, described his school days with the words: “ It is one of the worst memories of my life. I still dream today that I will not pass the Abitur. It wasn't a school, it was a penitentiary. That's why I don't want to write anything about it. "

The reputation of the school, which was purely a boys' grammar school until the 1970s, has suffered severely since the 1980s; it was assumed that the high proportion of immigrant children at the inner city school and their additional teaching requirements would mean that the level of teaching would suffer. This led to a temporary decline in student registrations, including from migrants. The reputation and popularity improved under Eckhard Wieberneit - the Hansa High School is now considered a Cologne school with a good reputation.

Timeline of developments since 1992:

The building project was built from 1898 to 1899 on behalf of the city according to plans by the city master builder Friedrich Carl Heimann (1850–1921) as a commercial school. Heimann created a building in a neo-Gothic style with rich ornamental and figural decorations .

In the roof area, the building suffered severe damage during the Second World War . Between 1951 and 1958 the roof area was rebuilt in a simplified form. The side facades were made of brick with natural stone integrations . A considerable part of the originally existing turrets, bay windows and other decorations such as friezes and capitals on the front are missing, and the gable is no longer designed with steps. The facade of the front facing the Hansaring was clad in sand and tuff and is dominated by the mighty windows. Over the arches of the main entrance there are statues of the personalities who have made a contribution to the development of Cologne's trade:

The three-storey extension on Ritterstrasse was built in the 1950s. A fundamental facade restoration took place a few years ago.

The building renovation was completed in 2002. Today the premises of the three-class Hansa grammar school are by far no longer sufficient to be able to offer the approx. 800 students appropriate learning locations. For this reason, the school will receive an extension, and new rooms (library and self-study center, cafeteria and work rooms) are to be created as part of the educational landscape of Altstadt-Nord. Construction work should start in 2013, but was delayed until 2015, at the moment the side wing has been partially demolished and work is being carried out on the library.

The building is a listed building and is one of the last remaining representative buildings from the Wilhelminian style on the Cologne rings. It was used as a filming location for television series twice: 2001 to 2009 for the series Mein Leben & Ich , 2010 for short excerpts from The Last Bull .

School camp Bouvier

The Bouvier castle near the Rhineland-Palatinate Niedersgegen , near the Luxembourg border is owned by the school and serves as a school camp . The manor castle from the 19th century is located in the so-called "Goldenen Grund" of the southern Eifel on the Sauer in the Eifel district Bitburg-Prüm , near the Luxembourg border, and is part of the "Castle and Hofgüter Körperich-Niedersgegen". From the fifth to the eighth grade, the students of the Hansagymnasium go to the Bouvier school camp once a year. In 2011 the school camp was completely renovated.
