The Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium is a high school in Cologne-Neuehrenfeld , which was founded in 1878 and is named after Albertus Magnus .

history

Established as a high school in 1878

Today's grammar school was founded as a high school for citizens at Easter 1878 and was initially housed in the rooms of the secondary school in Kreuzgasse. 1881 also rooms were also in the Cathedral - girls' school used. In 1882 the school was able to move into a new building in Spiesergasse, where it had been located in the immediate vicinity of St. Gereon's Church since September 26, 1882 . The Cologne city architect Hermann Weyer (1830–1899) planned the new building . Otto Thomé acted as the first headmaster.

In 1890 a trade class was added, with the school in particular to lay the foundations for the profession of merchant. That is one of the reasons why it was converted into a business school in the same year. In 1899, the commercial school branch moved into its own building, thus separating the Realschule and Spiesergasse.

Expansion as a secondary school in 1927

Since 1927 it has been possible to do the Abitur at the school , as a class can be run like a Reform Realgymnasium . As a result, the school was expanded again between 1928 and 1930 based on designs by the employee at the municipal building department, Hans Wiesmann. In 1937 the school was converted into a high school for boys.

During the Second World War , the school was damaged several times as a result of Allied air raids, for example by an air mine on April 11, 1942. After an air mine detonated, the students had to be housed in other buildings. The situation was made worse by a fire on May 31, 1942, which almost completely destroyed the school building. The lessons then had to be given in the rooms of the Realschule on Dagobertstraße. Another air raid on March 2, 1945 finally ended teaching operations, which could only be resumed in October 1945 in the Hansagymnasium .

Renaming to Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium and new building

On June 28, 1954, the Ministry of Education approved the school's application to rename it "Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium". On July 23, 1956, the foundation stone was laid for the new building in Neuehrenfeld , which could be occupied on January 22, 1958. The building was inaugurated on March 15 of the same year. The new building design by Hans Schumacher (1891–1982) was the result of a competition. The lead glass windows in the corridor to the auditorium, which were designed by the Cologne artist Will Thonett , also date from this period .

In August 1972, work began on the extension, which was completed in early summer 1977. The auditorium, which is also the pedagogical center, was added in 1973 and a second gymnasium in March 1974. From 2010 to 2012, extensive renovation measures were carried out on the buildings, some of which are listed buildings.

Extension

In February 2019, a three-story extension building according to the passive house standard with an underground gym in the northeast area of the school premises was ready for occupancy.
