Otto Wilhelm Thomé (born March 22, 1840 in Cologne ; † June 26, 1925 ) was a German botanist , illustrator and educator . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Thomé ".

life and work

Otto Wilhelm Thomé was on 13 December 1862 in Bonn with a thesis on the water hemlock doctorate . On October 18, 1872 he was awarded the steel war commemorative coin for caring for the wounded in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 . On July 27, 1876, he was appointed Rector of the Citizens 'School in Viersen and on April 1, 1880, Rector of the Higher Citizens' School in Cologne (Spiesergasse). The appointment as professor took place on September 16, 1882. The Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium Cologne , the Hansagymnasium Cologne , the Gymnasium Kreuzgasse and the Handelshochschule Cologne later emerged from the higher civil school in Cologne . Thomé, like the entire commercial college, were members of the Cologne department of the German Colonial Society .

On the initiative of Otto Wilhelm Thomé, a botanical garden was founded at the Vorgebirgstor in Cologne in 1887 . In 1912, the Botanical Garden at the Vorgebirgstor, with an area of ​​1.5 hectares , supplied  around 1,400,000 plants for use in schools in Cologne. The botanical garden , which has been greatly reduced since 1910 due to the expansion of the Bonntor freight yard , was reopened in 1914 on the grounds of the Cologne Flora .

On January 18, 1895 Thomé was awarded the Red Eagle Order 4th class excellent, and on 15 January 1898, it was commemorative medal for the 100th birthday of Emperor Wilhelm I awarded. After more than 30 years in the school service, Otto Wilhelm Thomé retired on November 30, 1909, and on February 2, 1910, he was appointed a secret councilor. In the 1st World War he received the Cross of Merit for War Aid on April 11, 1917 .

Otto W. Thomé was best known for his collection of botanical drawings Flora from Germany, Austria and Switzerland in words and pictures for school and home . The work comprises 700 illustrations and was first published in Gera in 1885 and was awarded a gold medal at the International Horticultural Exhibition in Cologne in 1888 .
