The Elisabeth-von-Thüringen-Gymnasium (EvT for short) is a high school in the Cologne district of Sülz . It is located on Nikolausstrasse right next to the Schiller Gymnasium , with which it shares some facilities and courses. The school was named after Landgravine Elisabeth of Thuringia .

School history

The Elisabeth-von-Thüringen-Gymnasium is the successor school to the Municipal Lyceum III, which was located in Weyertal 115 in Cologne-Lindenthal as an upper lyceum with a women's school and was destroyed in the Second World War.

The girls' high school

The school started its work at Easter 1954 as a re-established urban modern language high school for girls with two fifth grades and 57 pupils in the building of today's Kreuzgasse high school . Acting headmaster was Dr. Karl von der Lieck, the head of the Kreuzgasse grammar school at the time.

In 1955 the school with 119 pupils moved into a building on Nussbaumerstraße in Cologne-Neuehrenfeld . In 1956 she moved to Frankstrasse near Barbarossaplatz and moved into rooms in the advanced high school for boys.

On February 27, 1958, the Cologne School Committee approved the renaming of the school in Elisabeth-von-Thüringen-Schule. The name goes back to a parents suggestion, which was favored by the first regular headmistress Hildegard Prezell. In 1961 a new building on Nikolausstrasse in Cologne-Sülz could be moved into. The school now had 26,500 m²; the cost of the new building amounted to 2.5 million DM.

In 1962 the Elisabeth-von-Thüringen-Schule was expanded up to the upper level; at that time 587 students attended the school. In the same year the gymnasium was completed, Hedwig Avemarie took over the management of the school, and 24 pupils passed the school leaving examination at the first Abitur . Because the first pupils had to be taught in barracks in 1964 due to the rapidly growing number of pupils, a new building was planned.

The coeducational high school

In 1966, the Elisabeth-von-Thüringen-Schule took in boys for the first time, and coeducation began. In 1967 760 students attended the school. In 1976 the second wing of the building was completed. It has a further 2,240 m² of usable space and cost four million DM. In 1980 the number of students had risen to 845. In 1984 Anke Bering-Müller replaced Hedwig Avemarie as headmistress. In 1990 she was transferred to Hesse, and Lore Brandau took over the school management on a temporary basis.

In 1992 Günter Dionisius became headmaster. During his time, another building wing was approved for shared use by the Elisabeth von Thuringia and Schiller high schools, as well as a common auditorium and two sports halls. The new buildings, which meant 7200 m² of additional usable space and cost 19.7 million DM, were put into operation in 2002. Two years later, the school, which has been an “ independent school ” since 2000 , celebrated its 50th anniversary. In 2008 Günter Dionisius retired.

present

From 2008 to summer 2017, the headmaster of the EvT was Bernd Schwesig. In August 2017, Dr. Bruno Zerweck the school management.

As a three-course school with four entry classes, the grammar school currently has around 780 students and a total of 80 teachers. Since 2010 the high school has been organized as an open all-day school; At the beginning of the school year 2012/13, the expansion of the bound full-day, which ended in 2016/17, began. The cafeteria has been housed in a modern container building since September 2011. The compulsory language sequence of the grammar school is English (from grade 5), French or Latin (from grade 7) and Spanish (from grades 8 and 10).

The artistic focus of the school is on theater and choir work. For example, students, teachers and parents sing in common choirs. The highlight of the choir's work so far was the performances of Bach's Christmas Oratorio in 2007 and 2009 and Mozart's Requiem in February 2012. The regular one-week theater projects in the sixth grade and the theater work in the literature courses traditionally end with public performances in the auditorium.
