The Rhein-Gymnasium is a state-recognized high school in Cologne-Mülheim . One focus of the school, which was founded in 1830, is the natural science-linguistic area.

history

The school was founded in 1830 on the initiative of the Mülheim city council and the responsible district administrator as a higher middle school and was initially housed with 25 students in the house at 70 Freiheitsstrasse. In 1836, due to the high number of students, the first move to the upper floor of the Mülheim town hall on Wallstrasse took place. In 1848 it became an all-boys school.

In 1865 the school was given the rank of Secondary School, and eight years later in 1873 it became Secondary School. Another move due to lack of space took place in 1870 to a new building on Friedrich-Wilhelm-Straße. In 1882 the name Realgymnasium was introduced , and the Oberrealschule (1892) gradually became a Reform Realgymnasium (1905) with equal rights to the other Cologne humanistic grammar schools.

In 1912, for financial reasons, the school was divided into a royal grammar school (state; this later became today's Hölderlin grammar school ) and the reform and secondary grammar school with secondary school, which still existed on site. The school building on Adamstrasse was destroyed by an air raid on October 28, 1944 during World War II. As a result of the educational reform of the 1950s, it became a mathematics and natural science high school, which was able to move into the current building in 1954 after the students had previously been taught in the Schaurtestrasse grammar school and in the girls' grammar school on Genovevastrasse.

building

The school is located on a property with old trees directly on the Rhine . In addition to numerous classrooms and specialist rooms, the building also houses a multi-purpose auditorium that is approved for 400 people and where information and cultural events take place on a regular basis.

In the school yard there are various table tennis tables and sports fields for active planning of the break. There is a cafeteria and a lounge for high school students.

Educational offer

The school has three to four classes and has been a bound all-day school since the 2009/10 school year . The Rhein-Gymnasium is taking part in the state-wide school development project "All in - with all-day more future" along with another 30 selected high schools from all over NRW.

  • The first foreign language in class 5 is English, later you can choose between French and Latin . Latin can be chosen as the third foreign language in class 8 and Italian in class 10.
  • Since 1995/96 , Italian has been taught in addition to French and English in the upper secondary school . A few years later, three basic Italian courses were created. The number has declined these days but is supported by the students at the nearby Genoveva High School . The high point of this subject is the student exchange with the Italian city of Lucca .
  • In addition, a range of natural sciences is offered in the form of additional teaching events, as well as artistic and musical education, rowing and dealing with new media.
  • For the physical education next three technically modern multifunctional gyms are with floor heating, a soccer field, a boat house with own boats and several basketball courts and table tennis tables are available. The Genoveva swimming pool is in the immediate vicinity.
  • The music lessons take place in a separate wing. In addition to two classrooms, there is a keyboard studio and a music hall with adapted acoustics and numerous instruments that enable practical lessons with the theoretical basics. In addition to the choir group and a school orchestra, other groups are offered in which the students can learn to make music with various instruments.
  • The Rhein-Gymnasium offers a theater group. The working group is supported by the school orchestra. The stage props are created with the help of the voluntary work of the art courses and the committed parents.

particularities

Learning time concept

In the course of the full day, the classic homework was replaced by weekly plan work and independent exercise phases. In order to work on the weekly plan, the pupils have an additional hour (subject learning time) in each major. From grade 8, the learning time takes place on the learning days in the grade association. During the study times, the students work on their weekly schedule tasks and they can ask the subject teacher if problems arise. In grades 5 and 6, there is another additional pedagogical worker available, so that individual support can be increased through differentiation.

Self-learning center

The self-study center is a specially designed room which, in addition to the IT room, provides the Internet for all students free of charge. It also serves as a library and is therefore also suitable for research of all kinds. The self-study center is equipped with fifteen computers with internet connection for research. The room is maintained and controlled by volunteer students and committed parents and teachers. In addition, the school is networked in certain areas of the building.

Afternoon care

Working parents have the option of letting their children take part in the fee-based learning and care times organized by the youth centers in the school on afternoons without lessons until 3:45 p.m. If necessary, the children receive the necessary support there in the preparation of weekly schedule tasks and additional games are offered.

MINT

Since 2007 MINT (mathematics / computer science / natural sciences / technology) has been taught as a new subject at the school. The subject was introduced to broaden the school's mathematical and scientific focus and is aimed at students with special scientific talent or special interest. MINT is taught in grades 5 to 7 as a study group, from grade 8 it is a regular elective . The lessons are carried out by a team of teachers, i. H. different teachers take turns every quarter and only deal with one topic with the course. A special focus is on the use of extracurricular learning locations. The aim is for around 2/3 of the lessons to take place outside of school from grade 8 onwards. For this purpose, extracurricular cooperation partners such as companies and organizations are included in the STEM lessons.

Awards

In 2014, the Rhein-Gymnasium was honored for the first time with the "MINT-friendly school" award for its work in the MINT department.

School rowing club

The school has been involved in rowing since 1927 , initially as a rowing group together with another school in the nearby rowing club Mülheimer Wassersport eV, and since the mid-1950s in its own club. At first they were mainly involved in touring rowing , later also in racing rowing. Every year in early summer there is a regular hiking tour along various rivers, introductions are offered for the fifth and sixth grades.

In accordance with the increasing number of members, with the support of the development association, various rowing boats, both for touring rowing and for various disciplines of racing rowing, could be procured. The association currently has 33 boats of various sizes. Rowing has been part of physical education classes since 1972 and was able to contribute part of the school-leaving grades.

successes

Two students took part as members of the rowing club in 1988 in the Junior World Championships in Milan, Italy, where they finished third.
