The Abendgymnasium Köln (official name Abendgymnasium - Weiterbildungskolleg der Stadt Köln ) is a city-sponsored evening gymnasium with the aim of offering adults on the second educational path the opportunity to subsequently acquire a technical college entrance qualification as well as a general university entrance qualification .

history

The evening grammar school was founded on May 15, 1928 as the “Städtische Höhere Abendschule”, making it one of the oldest evening grammar schools in Germany. School operations between the founding and the end of the Second World War are not considered documentary. On October 1, 1949, the school was reopened under the direction of Walter Flemming. The evening high school shared a building with the Leonardo da Vinci high school Cologne-Nippes at Blücherstraße 15-17 in Cologne-Nippes. The move to the current building at Gereonsmühlengasse 4 took place in 1989.

In September 1998 the Bergheim evening school started operations as a subsystem of the Cologne evening high school in the premises of the Gutenberg high school . In contrast to the Cologne evening grammar school itself, in addition to the technical college entrance qualification and the Abitur, the secondary school certificate and the technical college entrance qualification are also offered.

Also in 1998 for the first time courses to obtain a secondary school diploma, technical college entrance qualification and technical college entrance qualification were offered in the JVA Cologne . Since then, prisoners have been able to take part in the co-educational courses under certain conditions . Such a co-education in custody is unique in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Since 2002 the evening high school has also offered the Abitur online . In this system, lessons are divided into 10–11 hours of face-to-face teaching per week (usually 2 evenings) and a distance phase in which educational content is acquired through self-study with the help of the moodle learning platform .

Student representation

The evening grammar school in Cologne has an active student body whose competencies, due to the fact that the students are of legal age, are more extensive than at schools of the first educational pathway. For example, half of the school conference is made up of teacher and student representatives.
