Hans Martin Schmidt (born November 26, 1936 in Hürth near Cologne ) is a German art historian .

Live and act

Hans M. Schmidt experienced his first childhood years in Knapsack near Cologne. During the Second World War he was evacuated with his mother in Markt Erlbach in Central Franconia . The parental home was destroyed in a bomb attack. Towards the end of the war he and his mother initially found accommodation with relatives, and from 1952 both lived in Bonn . His father went missing in Russia .

After graduating from high school in Cologne in the fall of 1960, Schmidt studied art history , classical archeology , history and philosophy at the universities of Bonn and Hamburg . In 1969 he received his doctorate with his dissertation The Master of the Life of Mary and his Circle - Studies of Late Gothic Painting in Cologne under Herbert von Eine in Bonn.

From 1969 to 1977 Schmidt worked initially as a volunteer and - after receiving the Richard Hamann scholarship from the Hessian Minister of Education in 1970/71 - from 1971 as a curator at the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt . In addition to further occupation with late medieval art such as B. the master of the Darmstadt Passion he prepared a. a. presented a number of important exhibitions by contemporary artists such as George Segal (1971), Joseph Beuys (1972), Walter De Maria (1974) and Arnulf Rainer (1975).

After a brief interlude in 1978/79 as a cultural advisor in Hanau , Schmidt moved to the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn in 1979 , where he was initially responsible for the art of the 20th century before becoming department director of the collections in 1982. At times he was acting head of the museum. Apart from numerous acquisitions, lectures and publications, he participated in the exhibitions of the Bonn State Museum until his retirement in 2000. Among the highlights of his exhibition activities at the State Museum, Schmidt retrospectively included Heaven, Fame and Glory (1989) on the occasion of Bonn's 2000th anniversary, Der Rhein - Le Rhin - De Waal (1995) and Poezie a Skutečnost / Poetry and Reality (2000), an exhibition with paintings from the 19th century from the Landesmuseum Bonn and a Rhenish private collection in the Haus zur Steinernen Glocke in Prague . As a researcher, he also succeeded in making a few new assignments.

From 1977 to 2005 Schmidt held teaching positions in art history at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach am Main and at the University of Bonn. From 2002 to 2008 he was chairman of the Society for Art and Design in Bonn. He continues to do research after his retirement. Working with Israhel van Meckenem resulted in the film Israhel van Meckenem - Goldsmith and Copper Engraver in 2011 . In 2015 he published the book The Last Signature - Graves of German Artists of the 20th Century .

He is married and has lived in Meckenheim near Bonn since 1979 .
